Remember that Lenin and Stalin were around along with the Japanese. It might have been much worse. One of them could have developed nuclear weapons or just invaded in place of the Germans.

After the armistice with the Bolsheviks, the Germans were able to shift forces to the western front, bringing up their strength to the tune of 70 or so divisions, compared with 25 or so for the UK. France had been mauled. Had the US not been brought into the war (thanks to the Zimmerman Telegram; the Lusitania was sunk in 1915, not 1917), the best that could have been hoped for would be that Europeans would have had to make peace as equals for the first time, ever.

It hasn’t happened to this day.

Read the book “Miracle at Belleau Wood” a few years back, excellent read.
