I’ve been overdue for another trip to the Porcupine Mountains for 20 years. Up there, overlooking the Lake of the Clouds is one of my favorite places on earth. It’s must-see Michigan!
I don't appreciate your calling BC a "crappy little town". Perhaps you could tell us where you were working and living when you decided to visit that "crappy little town" and what brought you up there to the Hotel Dilworth?
As a side note, when exactly did you experience having to use the wooden crank telephone box you allege was in your room when you stayed at the Dilworth Hotel?
Yes but I haven’t see many stars in the day time.
Not only that but if you played sports in the northern Michigan Class C conference which included teams from Charlevoix, Boyne City, Mancelona, Gaylord, Grayling, East Jordan, Petoskey and Oscoda, chances are you knew every one of guys you were playing against.
I have a friend now retired from the Navy who was in a bar in San Diego and was about to get into a fight with some guy when the guy's buddy said take him out "xxxxxxxx" (the guy's last name). My friend said "what was that name"?. It turns out the guy was from Oscoda and was the brother of a friend of my buddy's who played played football against him.

Sure! As a 15 year-old, I and my family were there. First as guests of friends and then a contractor-builder there by the name of Bob Land. His company built a small chalet-style home with a walkout to the back yard for us. It was on Snowcrest Trail. It wasn’t even a yard, per se...More like an entrance to or exit from a real forest. We did the staining, painting and even finished the clearing of the lot for additional parking, etc. The golf course was not far and the airstrip was fairly new then in 1974. Good times growing up in Michigan.

I grew up as a Michigan fan, before I went to UF....so I am in double pain right now.
Yup, I expected that as soon as I hit the ‘post’ button and reread what I wrote. Sorry for the crappy choice of words. The time-frame I was referring to was late 1950s when a group of us would drive up there on weekends to ski at Boyne Mountain and Nubs Nob from WMU in Kalamazoo. The Dilworth rocked in those days but those old phones in a box on the wall with a separate ear piece on a hook sticks in my alleged mind (I could be wrong about the crank but that’s another story).
That whole Grand Traverse area holds some of my fondest memories. Later in the 60s with my new wife and some other couples, we would pitch-in to rent a cottage for the ski season and drive up there every weekend, for several years. We’d also rent a cottage for a week or two in the summer to sail on GT Bay or one of the inland lakes.
I had not been there since those days until June last year when I returned, astounded to find those old towns spruced up and teaming with tourists. It’s understandable from your viewpoint, to prefer the way it used to be.

Do you remember Avalanche which was at the south end of town in Boyne City? That's where us local kids would ski because our parents couldn't afford season tickets to Boyne Mtn. Besides it was closer and all our moms had to do was give us lunch money, drop us off at about 8:30 a.m. and pick us up at 4:30 p.m.....It certainly kept us off the streets. LOL!
