The Kansas City Royals were a great story in baseball this year, but as a team with little star power that hails from a small market, their surprise run to face the San Francisco Giants in the World Series may not be resonating with more casual sports fans.
Fox attracted a still-sizable audience to Game 1 of the Fall Classic on Tuesday 12.2 million but this left it tied with the 2012 Texas-San Francisco opener, which previously had been the smallest audience to kick things off. Last years World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox averaged about 15 million, jumping 23% from 2012.
And in the adults 18-49 demo, Tuesdays game did a 3.4 rating to win the night for Fox. This was down 19% from last year (4.2) and 6% from 2012 (3.6) for a new low.
There is a world series playing?
I know, an Executive Order signed by 0bola. He can say it's for the Children.
I think it would help if they would bring in the local people for the broadcast booth. Put all 4 in the booth together or mix them but for the love of God, no more national broadcasters talking about teams they don’t follow.
A couple years ago during a game in Detroit that was broadcast on ESPN one of the baseball geniuses asked “Is that the Golden Gate Bridge” when they showed a view of the Detroit river.
After the NFL went all fruity celebrations and chest pounding displays all the time, football only gained in massive popularity. Looking at the current culture, it’s not surprising it is much more popular today.
Hopefully baseball will just keep flying under the radar and won’t institute radical changes in order to create more offense. Just speed up the pace by actually enforcing the rulebook with the time limit and the high strike.

Well, I’m keeping up my streak of never watching the World Series.
Your problem (games start too late) is due to baseball pandering the game itself away.
Baseball is a game meant to be played in the daytime. All true naseball fans love day baseball. Day baseball has TOTALLY disappeared drom the world series due to ratimgs pandering. Now all games must start at 7:00 or 8:00 pm eastern time in order to fit the socalled RATINGS SLOT.
But the bean counters lawyers and socalled tv programming experts have traded away one great asset (young audience) for a potential ratings in the prime time audiencce.
Will they ever learn? The wild card playoff is a winner. But fixed advanced schedules delay the series and extend an already too long season. All of the above are tvrating panders. d;^)
It should end before October starts.
Baseball in general is having a difficult time.
I watched some of the Tx Rangers’ home and away games. The stadiums had many sections that were empty.
Of course, the Rangers didn’t cause much of a draw this season, as they finished last place in the AL and last place in baseball.
The whole series would have been better had my beloved Dodgers been there...
Unfortunately going to be that way while the incompetent and corrupt Wilpons own the club. Too bad that Hedge Fund billionaire and life long Mets fan Einhorn was not able to buy it.
Hockey should stop before Memorial Day.
Football should stop before Groundhog Day.
They shoulda got Wendy Davis to throw out the first pitch, or, diagnosed someone with ebola during the pre-game program.
Very much agree.
The teams playing today would have placed 3rd-ish.
I also think as a nation we are too cool to play the game. Don’t know if it was true for you but for me I lived and breathed baseball for several years until my lack of talent forced me to admit there was no future in it for me...Still I loved the game.
I do not see the same enthusiasm in boys today...I don’t think the little/community leagues are drawing as they once did. I don’t think parents push it much.
In a generation, MLB may not even exist in its same form.
A reporter said that tickets were $400.00 for the cheap seats up to $5,000.00 for prime seats.
Couldn’t afford a seat? Then we get tortured by having to listen to Joe Buck and his tales about baseball.
It’s late October. Baseball should be over by now.
Baseball bores me to tears; at least you can get in a good nap during a golf round on TV!
The last time I paid attention to baseball was in the 1980’s, back when the Milwaukee Brewers didn’t suck...quite so much! :)
And the Tea Party and Climate Change or Globull Warming or Rush Limbaugh, Conservatives and the Republican Party.
