When is the wrong answer the right answer? Now. Today.
Reality alert: we have entered an alternative universe, thanks to Common Core. As people once scorned wrong answers, we will now learn to scorn right answers. Answer-getting (thats the new jargon) will be held up for contempt, and slowly eliminated. Thats the plan.
This is not marginal nonsense. No, it is already mainstream nonsense. Phil Daro is one of the three principal writers of the Common Core Mathematics Standards. A 17-minute video about his ideas is promoted this way: Phil Daro goes into detail on the problems of Answer-getting, one of the practices that the new Common Core Standards intend to greatly reduce.
As Phil Daro himself asks, Are You Teaching Mathematics or Answer-Getting Strategies? What sort of fool would think these were the same thing? No, they are now opposites.

Well I’m not sure, I just had my grandson calculate the odds using his new taught methodology and he came up with this: 2+3+17+92=Banana. I think were screwed!
I am gonna borrow that mathematical formula because I am craving a banana.
I believe you have identiified what is really at the heart of all this madness.
Progressives can only rule when logic, reason and common sense is eliminated and the public is driven by emotions and imagery.
Can’t take credit for it. Long been known. It’s the core of the 1936 communist goals.
Questions are a burden to others; answers a prison for oneself. - The Prisoner
Reality is not important. In fact it's unwanted. Proof of this can be seen whenever a government shill vomits out more global warming nonsense.
Nobody will prosper today without a steady inflow of mathematicians. Many of them are engineers who use math as a tool, not as a science on its own. Math is the basis of all high technologies today - biology, pharmaceuticals, communications, nuclear energy, chemistry.
A common cellular phone is quite complex, and a scientist of 19th century, even Joseph Fourier himself, wouldn't be necessarily able to grok it even if someone takes the phone apart and explains what each module does. The information theory got started only in 20th century:
The landmark event that established the discipline of information theory, and brought it to immediate worldwide attention, was the publication of Claude E. Shannon's classic paper "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" in the Bell System Technical Journal in July and October 1948.
If those "educators" think that they only need a handful of Alphas who can do math, they are wrong. You cannot take a group of people and say "you and you, go and become great mathematicians by tomorrow." In the past quite a few scientists managed to rise from the ranks of lower classes: "Born out of wedlock to a notary, Piero da Vinci, and a peasant woman, Caterina, in Vinci in the region of Florence..." - but far more failed, at huge loss to humanity.
Even worse under CC.
LOL at those that still send their kids to public school.
Yup. Any example of Liberal thinking, for instance.
Prosperity is for the elites. They will make sure there are just enough mathematicians to make sure their lifestyles keep getting better.
The rest of us will play video games and dine on insect paste.
Which would be totally acceptable if the throngs were told it was Brawndo or something appetizing in name. you would have a mad rush for signups.
Which is the real danger and why they are driving most to hopelessness. Pretty scary once you realize that we are living the first stages of every dystopian novel/move ever written. More scary is that few will admit it.
Homeschool.
“LOL at those that still send their kids to public school”
I heard at my last common core meeting that the same people doing common core are doing the test for the GED.
Common Core will probably make certain demographic elements of our society happy; i.e. they will not be able to get a correct answer but will glibly offer an example of their “reasoning.”
That's the correct answer. It should read "determine the value of "x". Math is supposed to be concise. Vocabulary has to be exact. It's part of the process.
Since the beginning of human history, leftists have been perverting the language to confuse and deceive.
“Did God really say...”
“Showing your work while getting the wrong answer gets you credit”
I also can confirm that. Ten years ago my daughter asked for help with her algebra. The problem was easy and I showed her how to do it in seconds. “Dad, I can’t do it that way we have to do it this way and show our work”
The method was convoluted and Rube Goldberg. The method was designed so the student could not get help from the parent.
And yes there were rain forest word problems in the text.
