Why more women choose not to marry
CNN ^ | 10/16/2014 | Pepper Schwartz

ome revolutions happen in a single day; others over decades. The rise of the voluntarily single woman has been happening in Western societies slowly, over time, concomitant with well-paying jobs, legal protection from economic or physical abuse, reliable birth control and the possibility of fulfilling careers and adventures.

Women are marrying at a later age these days, cohabiting with their partners or going in and out of short-term relationships without ever walking down the aisle.

Currently, 53% of women over 18 are in the singles column. Put another way, women now have choices that allow them to customize the arc of their lives and some of them find that it is best for them to put marriage aside.

Is this natural? Is this bad? Is this cause for alarm?

We have long counted on women's sacrifices and the compromises they've made to lift societies all over the world. We are worried that if women delay or forgo marriage, the all-important family unit will suffer. As much as I admire happy couples and families, I think this may be one of the few times in history when so many women could choose from such a full range of life choices without penalty or stigma. Since few people "have it all," why not choose being single if that's the best option?

In my sister’s case, she allowed the perfect to be the enemy of the acceptable. She had a list longer than my arm of all the things the only guy she would deign to marry HAD to have. He had to be taller than her, make more money, be more educated, never been married, have no children, have the right kind of hobbies, be very good looking, dress the right way, buy her the right kind of gifts (without prompting), be a great cook, have the right career, be the perfect communicator, be great in bed, love cats, the list went on and on. As she got older, the pool of men that fit all her rules dwindled to nothing, and she wasn’t “settling.” Now she’s 50, in ill health, alone, and bitter about the few guys that came close to meeting her standards who ended their relationships with her (probably because they got tired of trying to be perfect enough).

“Use wire cutters to clip my nails.”

Everything you mentioned isn’t product. It’s hygiene.

Wire cutters? Lol...

...but we took the kids to the pumpkin patch this past weekend and had a blast.

This past Saturday I was sitting on my law mower mowing my lawn. Nice sunny day. Two of my kids were in the backyard throwing a football. Our dog was chasing the errant balls.

It was then that I dropped my head in a silent prayer of thanks to the Almighty for the undeserved blessings he has bestowed on me.

I have a 20-year old homeless women I took in to live with me.

Her situation: she married a young man who promised a family centered lifestyle but who lacked a sense of family responsibility. He said he wanted a family and when the baby was born, he disappeared. She ended up living with her grandparents, who took the money she received from the government.

She is opposed to welfare. She sought a divorce and gave up her baby for adoption AFTER child protective services seized the infant on trumped up charges. His family came out of the woodwork to block the adoption and he won’t sign the divorce papers; her grandparents kicked her out of their house because she no longer received government checks.

She will soon be getting job training because it is now obvious that, married or not, she will have to work to support herself. Life is uncertain but one thing she has determined - a woman cannot expect men to be 100% truthful.

That's for sure. I know a young lady who wasn't going to go the route of her sisters and become a single mom. Her sisters got free education and many other perks. They looked down on her because she wasn't a mother. Now she too has succumbed and is also a single mom.

There wasn't any real help for her lower economic place in life until she became a single mom and now much is paid for and she is likely on her way up. Moral, responsible young people can't get help, but those who run out and get pregnant get all the help they could want? Talk about rewarding bad behavior!

Your poor sister sounds like she is incapable of emotional intimacy.

At the same time, I look at most women and wonder at the paradox of their existence in that they say they want a 'real man' but then they also want their independence, they want a career, they want professional recognition, and then, when it's convenient, then maybe they can bother being a wife and maybe even a mom.

You are wise beyond your years. That is exactly the problem with so many women these days. I cannot tell you how many business professional women I've met the last few years who are in their 40's and early 50's that have never been married, have no children, have a "great career" and have traveled the world but are now desperate to find not just "Mr. Right" but "Mr. Right NOW!"

My wife and I of 28 years separated last year for awhile, and it appeared we were destined for divorce court. When it looked to be a certainty, I removed my wedding ring. Funny how many women in their 40's to 50's suddenly became interested in a 52 year old, reasonably good looking and fairly well to do male business executive.

So glad our divorce didn't happen and we re-committed ourselves to making our marriage work. Sure alot of those 40-50'ish year old women area often quite nice looking -- but their desperation to get with someone, ANYONE shows and frankly some of 'em just ain't right in the head.
