ome revolutions happen in a single day; others over decades. The rise of the voluntarily single woman has been happening in Western societies slowly, over time, concomitant with well-paying jobs, legal protection from economic or physical abuse, reliable birth control and the possibility of fulfilling careers and adventures.
Women are marrying at a later age these days, cohabiting with their partners or going in and out of short-term relationships without ever walking down the aisle.
Currently, 53% of women over 18 are in the singles column. Put another way, women now have choices that allow them to customize the arc of their lives and some of them find that it is best for them to put marriage aside.
Is this natural? Is this bad? Is this cause for alarm?
We have long counted on women's sacrifices and the compromises they've made to lift societies all over the world. We are worried that if women delay or forgo marriage, the all-important family unit will suffer. As much as I admire happy couples and families, I think this may be one of the few times in history when so many women could choose from such a full range of life choices without penalty or stigma. Since few people "have it all," why not choose being single if that's the best option?

How much of a difference in age? At 18 what seemed “old” to me turned out to be not quite so much.

What do you put in your hair? Do you exfoliate? Do you have a nail clipper set? How about moisturizer, depending on the weather of course? Soap. What kind? How many different bars do you use?

Exactly. The question can be reformed to ask why guys aren’t asking girls to get married as in the past. The war on masculinity is one reason. When a guy asks a girl out and she acts insulted, it’s back to the Xbox.

A right good number of Mrs WBill's college friends are in their late 30s / early 40s. Mostly professionals (and scarily, mostly in education) they certainly would consider themselves "Feminists". Far from being poor, they're "single and loving" it, with fantastic trips (NYC, Europe, CA) at the drop of a hat, parties every weekend, and so on.
Looks like a life anyone would want, until you get past the thin veneer. Underneath it is a lonely, single, and desperately unhappy lifestyle. They've tried to replace "husband and kids" - things feminism says that they don't need! - with a party-all-the-time lifestyle, and are failing miserably at it.
Meanwhile, Mrs. WBill (who "settled", per some of her friends) and I are blissfully happy. Sure, we don't jet off to Europe for whatever the latest East End premier is.... but we took the kids to the pumpkin patch this past weekend and had a blast.
I'll take that over "shallow and meaningless", every time. :-) And, I'm glad that my lovely wife has been spending more time with the ladies at our church, than her old college friends. Much better class of people.
I don’t put anything in my hair, but I do wash it with cheap shampoo, I use cheap soap to wash with.
Toothpaste ? Is it still manly to use it to keep my teeth from rotting out ?
Foot spray ? To keep my feet from stinking ?
That’s about it, unless I get poison ivy rash and put ointment on it to stop the itch.
OK, I use under arm deodorants, shaving cream.

I think you have a point. For a man to have companionship, sex, and good cooking, and cleaning, 50 and more years ago, he had to get married. Even if he was unattractive and a low earner. And there were less than attractive women with other flaws who would marry him and these two would give each other a decent life or a so-so life.
with other alternatives to marriage for both these men and women above, they may choose not to settle for each other.
and watch how they are when they reach my age, pretty sad.

There was also a lot of social pressure to get married, no woman wanted to be referred to as an “Old Maid” or a “Spinster.”

I love it.
And since women are putting themselves first they are coming out last in the quality and richness of life. Selfishness leaves one cold in the end. Many will not know the real love they have forfeited in their quests for selfish fulfillment. They will not know that their lives could have been filled with love because they will think their cold selfish lives are what life is meant to be, having nothing to compare it to. Some will feel the emptiness and loss and resort to happy pills from the doc.
