Wal-Mart Stores Inc. cut its revenue outlook for its current fiscal year as it announced it is scaling back its expansion plans for its supercenters next year and stepping up investments in its online operations.
The worlds largest retailer, blaming an overall tough economy, now expects annual sales to be up 2 to 3 percent for its fiscal year ending in January. That is down from its earlier guidance of sales growth at the low end of a 3 to 5 percent range.
Wal-Marts diminished outlook increases concern about prospects for the critical holiday shopping season that kicks off late next month. It also comes on the same day that the government reported that September retail sales retreated from the prior month.

That’s racist.
It’s even tough for the dollar stores, and if people can’t afford dollar store any more - how bad is it?
But...but...butt... Barry and his ‘RATS say da conomy B boomin’!
Recovery my bum, thanks Obama.
We all drove down wages by shopping at Walmart that the only place we can afford to shop are the dollar stores.
I don't approve of Barry but he did not lead the march to Walmart and the export of manufacturing to supply it to China.
He didn’t reverse it either.
And a lot of it started with post-WWII public spending policies, which caused manufacturing jobs to flee the northeastern US for starters.
Putting chicken before egg, there.
Not to mention what an Ebola panic would do to the economy. Game, Set, Match.
Those long waits to check out running 10-15 minutes in almost any store in Fayetteville North Carolina has send me packing to anywhere else to shop.
In before ‘bring jobs now, just sayin.’
Thank you for being so generous with my money.
Some days it’s worth paying a regular supermarket to avoid that Wal-Mart experience: for example, earlier this week standing in a stale-fart nimbus, asking a fat-a** if she would mind stepping to one side to ponder her choices, allowing the rest of us to use her aisle.
Economic prosperity is a two step game. Play it one step and it is all down hill ad we have seen.
The free market depends on the circulation of money. Walmart is not good for that unless you live in China. Have you noticed all the factories there that used to be here?
Its the same at Wal-Marts everywhere. Been to some in 5 different states and all are the same. I now go there maybe three times a year.
I am New England, and the stores up here were not even making the +2/+3% this year already. In fact, A few have been registering year-over-year -1 or -2% declines.
Yet the company has still been assigning them a plan of 2% growth.
Please explain how my spending 20% more on batteries will get us out of the mess we’re in.
i never shop at walmart. i hate going to that place and so i don’t.
You just can’t be in Wal-Mart after 10:00 am; going early makes it a whole different experience.
