It’s funny that people think that 98.6F is such a precise estimate of normal body temperature. But the reality is that it was estimated by a guy working in the metric system, and represents a direct conversion from 37C, which converts to 98.6F. When the body temperature was initially pegged at 37C the accuracy was only to the closest degree C, so that the average would actually fall somewhere in the range 36.5C - 37.5C. That half degree C is +-0.9F. So, when normal was defined as 98.6F, the accuracy really was only good enough to say 97.7F-99.5F.

But even with that uncertainty range, the reality is some people run hot and others cold... I tend to run about a degree below “normal”.

Does that make sense?

I was at the doctor today. After getting my temperature I asked if my 97 was too low. Nurse said she that my Doc considered any reading under 101 normal. Something wrong here?

Normal? Maybe just sick enough to kick your feet up, watch TV and drink tea while staying home from work instead of bugging your doctor about a minor illness. However someone who had been exposed to ebola would trump that rule every day.

I know I run cold. If I hit 98.6 without having just exercised I am well on my way to being sick.

How can you trust your oral thermometer? I had a recent sinus infection, felt a fever coming on and took my temp with a new thermometer that read 100.5. Wanted to be sure so used a second thermometer and it said 99.4. Next I dug out an old glass one and it read 98.6. My ‘normal’ is around 97.4 so I was left with only uncertainty.

If the degree of separation for letting her on the plane was less near one degree, how could anyone be sure with today’s products?
