"La Puente" to Hit Christmas and New Year
Self | October 13, 2014 | PJ-Comix

Mexicans have an expression for a certain holiday event called "La Puente." La Puente means "The Bridge" and when used in connection to holidays it refers to when a holiday falls on either a Thursday or a Tuesday. The Fridays and Mondays in between such a holiday and the weekend is known as "La Puente" or the bridge to the weekend. Basically it means most folks take those "La Puente" days off so they have a four day weekend.

Here in the States, most of our Holidays with notable exceptions fall on Mondays for automatic 3 day weekends. However this holiday season we have two spectacular La Puentes: Christmas and New Years Day. Both days fall on a Thursday so it looks like we have two La Puentes in a row. Four day weekends although wouldn't it really be a FIVE day weekend? Christmas Eve means even if you do have to show up for work, many will have office Christmas parties. And something similar for New Year's eve.

So enjoy La Puentes coming up.

It wasn't until AFTER I got out of school that I found out that the Friday after Thanksgiving Day wasn't officially a holiday even though almost everyone also takes that day off although for me I hit Walgreens hard due to the Black Friday deals.

I know a couple of guys that run food trucks to the industrial parks and I guarantee they won’t be working during La Puente because almost all of their customers will be home. Most likely they also won’t work Christmas Eve and New Years Eve as well.

“So enjoy La Puentes...”

Sorry to sound grumpy, but what does this have to do with the United States? We are not “Estados Unidos” yet.

As I said, we don't usually have La Puentes here because most of our holidays fall on Mondays but this year Christmas and New Years fall on Thursdays. Most people will also be taking the intervening Fridays off and we might as well give a name to this situation and "La Puente" is as best a description as I've heard.

Enjoy your Las Puentes!

How many folks out there will be taking the day off during La Puente? I figure most.

"Tito Puente's gonna be dead, and you're gonna say, "Oh, I've been listening to him for years, and I think he's fabulous.""

When you’re retired, every day is a La Puente......In fact, when I get up in the morning I have to look at my digital watch to see what day it is........

It’s OK, the English language is notorious for borrowing words from other languages.

It’s like calling an afternoon nap a “siesta.”

La Puente, Calif., about 10 miles north of Whittier used to be known for its cattle, chicken and sheep ranches. Now, much of it has become the well-to-do suburb of Hacienda Heights and the City of Industry, an incorporated “city” that is mostly shopping malls, warehouses and industrial parks with only a few dozen actual “citizens.” The rest of La Puente, an incorporated city, is a suburb populated mostly by Mexican-Americans.

I am very happy that the new place I am working is closed on the Friday after thanksgiving and Christmas. Thanksgiving I was pretty sure about, but the Christmas thing is a real gift, since as a new person I’d never have the standing to take it off. We’ll probably have to work on Friday, Jan 2, but that is OK.

The Asians will be moving them out pretty quick.

In Puerto Rico, Three Kings Day used to be a bigger holiday than Christmas. Basically one LOOOOOOONG two week holiday from Christmas to Three Kings Day. A 2 week La Puente
