Great pic, but begs some questions.
Doesn't this look a bit too close for comfort, or is it not as close as it appears?
Who would be flying that close to a refueling op, and why?
The cockpit frame visible in the lower righthand corner suggests that it's not the other Aussie 18E/F that has flown thus far.

It may have been a telephoto lens.

Not that unusual and hard to say what the camera is set to.

Yeah. I kinda doubt that pic was taken with an I-phone.

Who would be flying that close to a refueling op, and why?I would guess the photo is taken from the tanker, which is there for the purpose of performing the refueling.

Unlikely given the perspective, I would think.

MRF ping.
I am, a F-16 Falcon fan but our brother MRF F/A 18 is always welcome to the party.
That is a beautiful shot of a fabulous bird.

the camera is mounted on the wing and shows the pilot of the tanker what is going on and is recorded for review later.... lt. smith, your approach to the tanker was slow and you spilled 47 gallons of fuel over a protected wetland... consider yourself confined to your bunk.
that sort of thing

Guys who know what they’re talking about sure can screw up a good thread.
To: teeman8r
That’s the angle from a KC wingtip?
To: Ready4Freddy
Depends. If it is a KC-130 then that perspective looks spot on.
Or any other tanker that uses wing mounted drogues.

I don’t think it is too close. If my memory serves me, there are some tankers that have both a boom and a drogue, and if there is a boom operator there, the drogue is likely coming out from an area off to the side.

Could have been taken from the back seat of another F/A-18 refueling from the other wing.
