Jennifer Lawrence Speaks About Nude Photo Hack: 'It Is Not A Scandal. It Is A Sex Crime.'
Business Insider ^ | 10/07/2014 | Pamela Engel

After remaining mostly silent since nude photos of her were taken from her phone and leaked online, actress Jennifer Lawrence has spoken out at length to Vanity Fair about the hack.

"It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime," Lawrence told Vanity Fair. "It is a sexual violation. It’s disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change. That’s why these websites are responsible."

"Just the fact that somebody can be sexually exploited and violated, and the first thought that crosses somebody’s mind is to make a profit from it. It’s so beyond me. I just can’t imagine being that detached from humanity. I can’t imagine being that thoughtless and careless and so empty inside."

She went on: "Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this. It does not mean that it comes with the territory. It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting."

I agree she made a bad choice. Certainly one I would not want my daughters to make.

My 2¢, her consequences due to the hack following that bad choice were unreasonably magnified.

Self-evident fact since there are about a gazillion servers, both foreign and domestic, where these pictures are processed, stored, as well as distributed to millions of individuals that save them while not being prosecuted.

With all the phone apps that have access to everything on the phone it could be anyone from those companies taking a peek.

Well! Glad to know I haven't changed in all these years!

I also have a question for some of the angrier posters on this thread: I wonder how many of them have daughters/grand daughters who are in their teens or older and also have the SnapChat app on their phone. If they do, I can pretty much guarantee that the girls have engaged in this sort of activity. Food for thought.

I remember when Doctor Laura’s ex-boyfriend sold her nude photos to a public news agency. The guy was a creep but she poised for the photos and should have wondered what could happen to them.

Winter’s Bone was an excellent film. She carried it beautifully.

“Lawrence gets hacked. Someone gets photos she previously deleted, and it’s her fault.”

I never said it was all her fault. Her behavior, however, made this possible. What she did - no matter how much she has a right to do it - was stupid and risky.

“Had someone obtained her banking information, her home address and phone number, her SSN, then obviously you’d have no problem with Lawrence’s outrage, right?”

False. I think she has every right to be outraged because someone violated the law and her privacy. She is still responsible for the photos she took, however.

I would say the taking of a nude photo such as through a peephole, without consent of the photograph subject, is a sex related crime such as being a peeping tom.

I honestly do not know whether “peeping” is a sex crime, although it is commonly related to sex. Voyeurism is certainly a fetish, but the illegality only comes in when the subjects being viewed are unwilling or unaware.

The stealing of digital data in any form is theft. Does the fact that the form contains a nude image make it worse than theft? Does that depend on whether it was taken for profit or prurient interests?

I have neither spent much time considering these ponderables, nor do I claim the wisdom to define it all for society.

Laz probably has the IP addresses of everyone who clicked on his provided link. Funny world, isn't it.

Just the fact that somebody can be sexually exploited and violated, and the first thought that crosses somebody’s mind is to make a profit from it.

The fact is that she couldn't have been sexually exploited and violated without her consent. She needs to STFU and learn her lesson.

Which means they were taken from her personal property.

She owns the storage array where they were stored? It resides in her house? If not, she is at fault for this situation. Yes, someone hacked a server somewhere and accessed its storage. A crime.

But if she had used her phone to take pictures of puppies and kittens there would be no hullabaloo. Perhaps she should have thought a little further than her nose and used a good old fashioned camera. Even a digital one would have been a better choice than her phone. She is a Techno Dunce and is paying the price for her ignorance. Boo hoo.

The crime is the same as if the pictures were in a box under her bed.

No it is not. She did share the pictures by sending them to someone via cell phone. That is as if she had a box of photos and set them on her front steps for a few hours and THEN hid them under her bed.

The act of taking nude photos of oneself is one's own business. But when she sent them via cell phone to someone else without considering the danger inherent in the technology, she screwed up.

What was done to get those pics is a crime. No doubt. Someone should be prosecuted and punished. But Jennifer Lawrence should realize she is not blameless.

She did not consent or release her private photos. They were stolen from her electronic backup. Honestly, the attitude of a lot of the posters on this topic disgusts me.

Fine by me if he has and posts the IP’s of the people who clicked on his link. In my opinion, he and everyone who has looked at those photos should feel very ashamed of exploiting a young women whose personal property was stolen.

It was an attempted random act of humor that failed and missed the barn by a country mile.

All of this is not really my business at all.

You don’t know what you are talking about. She did NOT have to send them to anyone. THAT’s The friggin’ point. The smart phone is also a camera. You take a picture and put in your “e-shoe box”. Unfortunately for her, the shoe box was iCloud and it got hacked.

I would agree with you if we knew that she sent the pix via email. But we don’t know that. IN fact, comments suggest otherwise.

The other little wrinkle in this is that your cell phone's camera and mic can be activated by hackers, Facebook, the NSA (same thing) surreptitiously.
