GM wants to base its cars around four basic vehicle sets that broadly cover every category. There will be a front-drive platform, a rear-drive platform, one for crossovers, and one from trucks. This will cover all four brands and all six continents that GM sells cars on. Its a bold and ambitious plan, though carrying it out will be more difficult than planning it. Every level of the manufacturing process needs to be included, and theres the chance that GM loses the flexibility to respond to market demands.

Who cares about Government Motors.

That's similar to what Ford has done under the One Ford program. The platform for the Ford Fusion/Mondeo sedan, for example, is also used on the European-market S-Max and Galaxy minivans.

The engineering is difficult.
But the implementation for the union ownership will prove impossible.
GM will need another bailout.

Move to China and take Barra with you!

The only difference between that and the proposed 2017 Dodge Ram is that it is powered by a different ruminant.

Upon which of those platforms will they build the Corvette? If it's a '70's Corvette, that would be the truck platform.

I think halo/flagship vehicles like the ‘Vette get excluded from programs like this. They tend to be nearly-handbuilt anyway, and are too market-specific to universalize like this.
Alternately, this is a subtle signal that they’re cutting the Corvette, which [sarcasm] wouldn’t be a phenomenally stupid move at all[/sarcasm].

That has got “flip me and roll me like tumbling dice” written all over it.
