Ebola: At what threshold do you self quarantine~ Vanity

Posted on 10/01/2014 12:34:14 PM PDT by GraceG

So at what level/number of ebola cases in the USA should people consider self quarantining themsevles in order to either avoid getting infected or in order to wait out a few weeks in case you may have picked it up to prevent spreading it.

Here is what I have a framework:

1. 1,000 cases in the United States with 0 in your own state.

2. 500 cases in the United States with 1 or more in your home state.

3. 250 cases in the United States with 1 or more in your home city/town.

4. 10 cases in the united states with 1 or more in your neighborhood (4-10 block radius).

Just a quick list on what I think, but not I am not an expert...

Wonder how the thousands of Liberians in Dallas and about are handling this..?....I only know that they want to cancel public meetings and events. Which when I heard that figured the guy was Liberian. Hopefully those folks have been here long enough to leave their superstitions in Africa and not let that get in the way of “thinking”..

That’s just it, Phase 2, is what is causing it to spread.

Airborne, used in a science or medical sense, would be something that hangs in the air, and can be swept up by air currents and spread like a dandelion seed over a distance...

Aerosols rarely travel more than a few feet.

I just retired in June, so that chance of getting it is removed. Checked my pantry this afternoon, and if it was required I have enough food for about 3 months.

...”basically droplets “...

body fluid type droplets.....so how many droplets does it take for the Ebola Virus to latch onto those "droplets" when someone coughs?

I understand the technical meaning of the word, I was just using the language of the OP, “self-quarantine”. When I said I would self-quarantine I meant more than what you are saying, I mean literally shelter in place, no contact with anyone.

Include Ebola in adjacent states in the analysis.

Also include your proximity to large airports (and 'rat controlled cities).

We ‘re dealing with a very skittish public here...add Liberians and ‘other cultures’ who still practice ritual junk and sacrifices and all manner of ways they bury their dead and heal their folk...not to mention the muslim terrorist's who aren't going to turn themselves in...this could move to a very real powder keg....

As one poster wrote of just this recent patient...like hand grenades rolling around our communities.

I really don’t understand your question..

If it’s what I suspect, the ebola virus is in the blood. If one in the late stage were to cough, aerosol droplets could contain the patients blood in minute quantities, but that would be enough to infect a healthy person if the droplet or residue of it were to make contact with someone’s eyes, nose or mouth, or break in the skin.

This is why a mask is put on the patient as well as the attendants, and why a isolation room has a negative air pressure. and why all the surfaces are decontaminated frequently and why gowns, gloves, masks, bedding or anything else that is absorbent is used once and incinerated.

The same procedure are used for any nasty communicable disease and we have a lot of them..

Well...I would not go to those lengths, unless I suspected that I had contracted the disease. I would do it to protect others...

But I did not get the impression that you were referring to that sort of a situation.

Knowing that if I remained hydrated and had some calorie intake, some general care to prevent bacterial infection, I would have a better than 50/50 chance of beating it.

Or I would just die in place...in self imposed quarantine.

This should have covered the problem, seems to me:

“Whenever the Surgeon General determines that by reason of the existence of any communicable disease in a foreign country there is serious danger of the introduction of such disease into the United States, and that this danger is so increased by the introduction of persons or property from such country that a suspension of the right to introduce such persons and property is required in the interest of the public health, the Surgeon General, in accordance with regulations approved by the President, shall have the power to prohibit, in whole or in part, the introduction of persons and property from such countries or places as he shall designate in order to avert such danger, and for such period of time as he may deem necessary for such purpose.”

Well, Grace, I live about 20 miles from the Dallas patient, so Ebola is fairly close to my house.

We know 5 children in five different schools were with the patient so the children have been isolated (three elementary schools, one middle school, one high school). They attended two or three days of school before they were identified and removed from those schools.

If a case happens in Denton County, my county now, and it’s not close, we will limit trips for food, etc. and start mandatory cleaning after coming out of stores and before entering the house and cleaning ourselves again after entering. If more than one case is in the county, we go into self imposed “lockdown”. We can do that without any problem for a number of months if necessary.

I guess that would depend on who was in the audience.
