Transgenderism Is A Mental Illness, Not A Civil Rights Issue

If someone came to a doctor and asked him to cut off a perfectly healthy arm because it just felt "wrong" for the arm to be there, should the doctor do it? This isn't an idle question because this does happen with a mental illness called Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID). People who have it feel as if they're not supposed to have a certain body part, like an arm or leg. As a general rule, doctors won't remove a healthy body part; so some of these poor deluded people crush, mangle, burn, or otherwise deliberately destroy their own arms or legs in order to get a surgeon to slice them off.

This raises a question: Are surgeons who refuse to remove healthy limbs from people with BIID doing them a service because they're mentally ill or are they denying them their civil rights? MOST of us would say that a surgeon who refuses to cut off a healthy leg is doing the right thing.

Of course, not everyone would agree. In fact, there are some people who will tell you that mental illness is a “super power.”

Members of the mad pride movement do not always agree on their aims and intentions. For some, the objective is to continue the destigmatization of mental illness. A vocal, controversial wing rejects the need to treat mental afflictions with psychotropic drugs and seeks alternatives to the shifting, often inconsistent care offered by the medical establishment. Many members of the movement say they are publicly discussing their own struggles to help those with similar conditions and to inform the general public.

…Some Icarus Project members argue that their conditions are not illnesses, but rather, “dangerous gifts” that require attention, care and vigilance to contain. “I take drugs to control my super powers,” Mr. DuBrul said.

It’s easy to laugh at this silly idea. Hearing voices or thinking the CIA is using a mind control ray on you is supposed to be a super power? Seriously?

But, this is a relatively small movement that happily hasn’t gained wide societal acceptance. Meanwhile, something just as ridiculous, the idea that you can change your sex, is accepted by many people in society.

There are people demanding that we change the birth certificates of people who’ve had sex reassignment surgery to reflect the gender they now claim to be. Children are being told to use whatever bathroom they feel most comfortable using. Kids under the age of 10 are being given drugs and treatment to prepare them for sex change surgery later on.

This is what happens when you cater to a pathology instead of treating it.

If you are born a man, you can mutilate yourself and take female hormones, but you can’t become a woman. If you are born a woman, you can mutilate yourself and take male hormones, but you can’t become a man.

If you’re a man who mutilates yourself to look like a woman, you’re not going to actually be a woman. You’re also probably not going to be the attractive fantasy you imagined yourself being because you’ve had male hormones pumping through your body for a lifetime. Your relationships are probably going to be screwed up because most men are going to view you as another man. Even if you do somehow meet a guy you like who isn’t using you to fulfill some forbidden fantasy for a night, what happens when he finds out? The relationship is probably over. The sex probably isn’t going to be good either because your groin has been cut to pieces and refashioned. Additionally, your mortality rate will be 51% higher than the general population because of suicide and all the female chemicals you’ve pumped into your body. In fact, the suicide rate for people who are transgender is 25 times that of the general population according to the American Psychological Association.

Certainly, there are some people who are happy and successful after having gender reassignment surgery, just as there are happy and successful people in every other walk of life, but they are exceptions to the rule. What about everybody else? Imagine mutilating yourself and realizing that it didn’t make any difference or worse yet, that it was a HUGE MISTAKE. What do you do then?

When children who reported transgender feelings were tracked without medical or surgical treatment at both Vanderbilt University and London's Portman Clinic, 70%-80% of them spontaneously lost those feelings. Some 25% did have persisting feelings; what differentiates those individuals remains to be discerned.

We at Johns Hopkins University—which in the 1960s was the first American medical center to venture into "sex-reassignment surgery"—launched a study in the 1970s comparing the outcomes of transgendered people who had the surgery with the outcomes of those who did not. Most of the surgically treated patients described themselves as "satisfied" by the results, but their subsequent psycho-social adjustments were no better than those who didn't have the surgery. And so at Hopkins we stopped doing sex-reassignment surgery, since producing a "satisfied" but still troubled patient seemed an inadequate reason for surgically amputating normal organs.

There’s nothing shameful about having a mental illness. If you break your leg, you go to a doctor and get it fixed. If you have some form of mental illness, you go to a psychologist or psychiatrist and get it treated as best you can. Sometimes you can be cured. Sometimes it’s a lifetime struggle, but all of us have different challenges to deal with and that’s okay.

On the other hand, you can rant about “bigots,” “gay pride” and “civil rights” all day long, but it doesn’t change the fact that encouraging troubled people to permanently disfigure themselves instead of working through their issues with a mental health professional is a thoughtless, cruel, and monstrous act.

Here are my feelings about the whole transgendered issue.

****

If you were born with a p-nis and test-cles but are convinced you are actually a woman, there is something wrong with your brain.

If you were born with a v-gina and ovaries but are absolutely positive that you are, in fact, a man, there is something wrong with your brain.

No.

Stop it.

If you are actually willing to cut off your p-nis so that you can feel more like the woman you think you are, you need help. If you want to have your breasts removed and your v-gina surgically altered into a sort of male organ with the help of hormones, you are not well in the head.

It is not okay. It is not healthy. You are mentally ill.

Notice, I didn’t say you were a bad person or that you should harmed in some way. But you are what people used to refer to as “crazy.” (This apparently ended some time in the last 10 years.) The fact that you do not believe that you are “crazy” does not make you any less “crazy.”

And I don’t care how many health professionals disagree with my point of view. In fact, I find most of their enabling to border on criminal negligence.

I would bet that their families supporting their dementia is the reason.

Yes but those doctors can make a lot of money catering to those troubled people.

There are truly born hermaphrodites but it is extremely rare. These freaks running around butchering themselves like a Thanksgiving turkey are sad disturbed people. I remember a few years back about the “Oregon Man Gives Birth” affair. NO, it was not a man. It was a woman who had butchered her perfectly healthy body to look like a gross woman with a butchered body.

If one of those people wants to drop 100,000 dollars to look like Chaz Bono fine. I don’t have to accept it. But with the freaks in power giving them tax dollars and now they will soon be allowed to join the military and have 4 years of “treatment” picked up by the taxpayer I have a HUGE problem with it.

Furthermore look at how Hollywood promotes it as wonderful and normal. I don’t watch award ceremonies but was there any doubt that man-freak from Orange is the New Black would win something just because he is a freak who removed his genitals? He was heralded as some sort of supermodel and a role model for America. Sick.

Yes - and homosexuality and other deviances are also mental disease. I feel sorry for them but that is a fact nonetheless.

Let’s not forget about the transgendered “person” who eventually falls for the “opposite” gay sexed person, who is actually the same sex as they were to begin with; or one of the same sex, which is opposite to their original sex.

We are all born with weaknesses. Part of our God-given journey here on earth is an attempt to gain control over that part of ourselves. Some people have a weakness for alcohol or drugs. We treat these people for their condition. [Well, in the case of those with a weakness for marijuana, we just pass laws making that legal.] My father-in-law was an alcoholic, but stayed dry the 20+ years I knew him before his death.

Given the incredibly strong feelings that our sensory nerves can produce, the people I have incredible respect for are those with same-sex attraction who refuse to give in to their urges and turn to Christ for a better answer. We know that after the resurrection, our weaknesses will be eventually be removed, even if it takes several millennia to do so. After all, what is a couple of thousand years compared to eternity?

I remember that she was paraded like a freak show soon after she had herself mutilated, but I wonder how she is doing now?

I seriously doubt that the mental illness that drove her to seek mutilation has dissipated since she was mutilated; she is probably still extremely unhappy.

It is criminal that people with this mental illness are humored and coddled, instead of being treated. Yes, I know that treatment of mental illness lags behind treatment of other illnesses--but to use the mentally ill to get a quick buck instead of trying therapy is a gross violation of their humanity.

All true and I applaud those of us who overcome their weaknesses and the lure of sensual gratification to pursue grace.

But same-sex attraction is a dysfunction of the system, damage to the design, a dead branch on the family tree. It is not even remotely normal in the overall scheme of things. Worse, as a disease of the mind, it has enormous capacity to damage and destroy all around them.

Good Post!
Christ is the answer to everything in this horrible world. It is my hope & prayer that a great many turn from this mental disease (yes that’s exactly what it is) and run to Him!

One problem with “mental health professionals” is that many of them are themselves quite, quite mad and on the same powerful psychotropic drugs they prescribe like lemon drops to their patients. That and their “science” is more closely akin to witch doctoring than to any truly empirical branch of knowledge.

First do no harm. This is the basic principle of health care. You won’t be able to help everybody who comes to you, but at least to them no harm. Surgically mutilating a patient is deliberate harm. What kind of sick monster does that. Those doctors are plain evil. The patients are sick, their doctors are beyond sick.

Nailed it.

The problem with treating mental illness, much like treating addiction or solving a great many societal problems, is that we just don't know how to do it.

The treatment of mental illness is at best at roughly the same stage of medical illness as the treatment of physical illnesses was in 1800.

Which is not to say we won't advance in our ability to treat such illnesses, but the problem is we pretend to each other we can treat them when we really don't know how to.

Yup, it's hard to fool mother nature. Can you imagine having to try to figure out what gender a dead person is when the body resembles a male or female, but the chromosomes say the opposite? If you have XX sex chromosomes you are female. If you have XY you are a male.
