DETROIT – A Detroit police pilot project is using a gunfire detection system to help officers pinpoint where shots are being fired in the city.

Police Chief James Craig tells The Detroit News that since the program began Sept. 22 the ShotSpotter system detected what appeared to be 24 shootings. Craig says testing is being done on the system and "tweaking" needs to be done.

Craig didn't specify where the system is being tested, how many sensors are employed or how long the pilot program will last.

Craig knows how to deal with criminals.

He encourages people to arm themselves and to defend themselves. He says that criminals will continue to shoot each other and he's not going to waste too many resources on investigating those shootings when the victims and witnesses won't talk to police anyway. Instead he'll put maximum resources into investigating crimes against the innocent. Detroit is a major 2nd amendment success story.

A calendar would be much cheaper.

Does the day end in a ‘y’? If yes, there’s gunfire. If no, there’s not.

We tried it in our city. It was a waste of money.

You know that something is a miserable failure when it finally makes it to Detroit.

This system has been around for several years, and the cities that buy it all use the same pre-canned press releases.

Five years ago, AP press releases proclaimed the end of violent crime before the system was even taken out of the box. It claimed to catch all shooters withing minutes, with all the SWAT teams and their heavy weaponry converging on the spot within seconds. New York City was also declared to be crime-free as soon as the contact was signed. The PR was identical, sparing the municipal PR departments from even thinking about news releases. Just another feature of a system that is 99% vaporware.

Since those great victories, these systems, from assorted companies, have brought peace, and justice, to all the cities in Iraq, and is projected to result in victory in Afghanistan, too.

Smaller American cities are also enjoying the benefits, often without informing the taxpayer, who have difficulty telling the difference between "before" and "after".

Stop making perfectly good sense....or keeping in jail.....the convicted perps who are caught without permits, stolen guns, yada....sending them away for a long long time....instead of plea-bargaining away the existing laws.

It would be cheaper to just send the cops to a random street corner and wait 5 minutes.

What if the firearm is equipped with a suppressor? Suppressors are designed so that shots are very difficult to pinpoint by hearing. With the open distances involved, there won’t be muzzle blast and flash. I also don’t think they register on ballistic crack. If the detectors do, then go to subsonic ammo. The detectors become worthless.

Wouldn’t it be easier to determine where gunshots are NOT being fired in Detroit?
