Microsoft offers first look at new Windows - and gives it a name

(Reuters) - Microsoft Corp will unveil a new name for its best-known product on Tuesday when it offers the first official glimpse of its latest Windows operating system.

The project, known for the past few years as "Threshold" inside the software company and "Windows 9" outside it, will likely get an entirely new brand, or just be called Windows, analysts said, ahead of its full release early next year.

Android is based on Linux, which means it is covered by the GPL so Google must make source code public.

I like your overall list, just a quibble on this point. The GPL would require Google to provide any source code directly based on GPL code, including modification, but would not require the release of any code for custom software, even if that software uses GPL or LGPL code. It's only when you fork/modify the GPL code that you get "infected" by the "GPL virus".

I have yet to see a good emulator for Android, and given how much more powerful a PC or Mac is compared to a mobile device, a good emulator (or VM) should be easy to manage from a performance standpoint.

9. Create a Linux subsystem built on Windows’ existing Unix subsystem. Create an X Windows emulator that allows Linux-style GUI apps to display on the PC desktop.

Basically make Windows the total-compatibility platform that can run anything.

it ate 2 years of pictures, music and documents by performing an unplanned self initiated hard drive reformatting.

You didn't have a backup?

Hard drives don't last forever.

Windows 8 sucked. Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell isn’t bad...but doing the massive downloads to upgrade 8 to 8.1 was not fun, and I shouldn’t need to install aftermarket software to make an OS behave more like the one before. With 8.1 & CS, it is almost like having Windows 7 installed - not quite as nice, but OK.

It also wasn’t fun doing Internet searches to find out how to shut off the corner stuff, or getting some screen up that you did not want and wondering how to get away from MS’s app store...

The Start switch is in the the glovebox, on page 638B of the owners manual. Written in the “Microsoft Help Clear Prose” language.

Thankfully, by the time I needed to set up a Win8 laptop for a friend, enough other people had had the same problem. A Google search provided the solution and led to an immediate upgrade to Win 8.1.

Years ago I needed to drive a friends Peugeot, a model 104 from back in the late ‘70’s, IIRC. The gearshift came straight out of the dashboard. The doors unlocked by pushing DOWN on the button, the windows cranked up/down the opposite defection from ALL the cars I’d previously driven - US, English, Swedish, Japanese, German, Italian.

Windows8 = New Coke

I’ve had Windows computers run on the same hard drive for over 5 years and never reformat themselves. The hard drive didn’t fail the software returned itself to new out of the box condition and dumped all saved material in the process. In fact the computer is still running on the same hard drive it’s just running Windows 7.

As far as I can tell from the website not OS’s. I might call the local “genius” store and ask them.

Is it because they made it do something else besides put up the blue screen?

They thought of doing the spinning beach ball of death but that was already taken.

Don’t worry, if you wait long enough it will never stop spinning, you will have to reboot and lose all your work but you will never get a blue screen with a Mac.

Just when you really miss Chet and the pitbull threads along comes a good Mac vs Window thread!

On your post, I heard Win8.1 was good. I’m due for a new box but wanted to wait past the first intro of Win8. I’m not one to go for the first release.

I've never heard of a linux computer returning itself to a new 'out of the box condition'.  I can't really imagine by what mechanism that might occur.

As my post stated, I went from Win7 to 8.1 - never experienced Win8.

That said, Win8.1 boots REALLY fast direct to the Desktop. I rarely visit the “tiles” but the program menu with its very small tiles is just fine by me.

Re: stability, XP was horrible with its “Blue Screen of Death” crashes - yet some freepers swear it’s still the best.

Win7 was much more stable than XP...and Win8.1 is darn close to perfect on stability. Add its faster speed, I don’t get the attacks on WIN.

I’ve never been an Apple fanbois - waaay to much hype and overpriced.

I had a Iphone 3, it ran out of space to update the IOS.
While I’m not much for the new tech toys. Except a higher end sewing machine. If I had the room I’d have a Quilting machine.

Not a scratch on the face plate, I keep my phones in soft padded pouches. Battery was getting old and not holding charge well to boot.

Hubby had to suck off all my music and photos to install the new IOS.

I did not like the new system, it made me download Itunes Store, and would not let me edit my photos or add photos except on camera roll. Well grands and great grands are growing and I want the latest photos to show off that get posted to FB. It became obsolete and useless.

Love the Samsung Note 3 I bought, still learning all the features, but that Micro Memory card is great, I have a 8 gig one now, can be expanded to 64 gig if need be. The stylus is great feature too. I use it on easy mode, as most of the apps are not things I use daily. And I’ll have my step daughter delete any that she can that does not effect the operational system. Only thing I don’t like is that when you enter things on your calendar you can not put in a days warning. And the Contact list has no place for addresses.

Should be a way you can customize what you want on such an expensive product. But it should last at least 5 or more years at the pace I use it. I have the same complaint about cable TV, 200+ channels and we watch 30, or should I say we tape maybe 1 show like Duck Dynasty off that 1 channel. Cars, sports, Pickers, Pawn Stars, History, Racing, and some Food Net work, Voice and AGT are taped for later watching. Country’s Family Reunion, Larry’s Country Dinner, and Pop goes the Country. RFDTV.

I don’t do crime shows. Or smut.

And the Contact list has no place for addresses.

You could try a 3rd party contact manager. Some of them act as dialers and sms clients as well. I don't bother because my contacts are so few.
