Sexual assault by law enforcement has been a problem in Oklahoma of late, with three different officers being arrested recently for on-duty sexual misconduct. Oklahoma women are understandably a bit anxious about the threat of being mistreated during a traffic stop, but Captain George Brown of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol has a helpful tip for anyone whos worried: If you just follow the law in the first place so you dont get pulled over, you have nothing to worry about! Thats awesome to know, because Im pretty sure no one has ever been pulled over for a tail light thats out or a routine drunk-driving check. Or for no reason at all. But why dig into the root of the problem when we can issue inane advice about how women shouldnt have gotten themselves into the situation in the first place?
Browns alleged advice to Oklahoma women is quoted by an anchor during local news station KJRHs coverage of the most recent arrest, and his words of unwisdom follow closely on the heels of but what was she wearing? and maybe women just shouldnt drink in public or theyre just asking for something bad to happen in terms of victim-blaming for sexual assault. Just follow the law and youre safe from police rape (unless you arent), and if you did break the law, I guess having a cop force you into the back of his patrol car is just what you should have expected! I cant imagine his advice to just not get pulled over was well received by the dozen-plus victims assaulted and mistreated by the three officers arrested in the past month. Sorry, ladies, if you just hadnt been speeding then maybe this wouldnt have happened to you.
While teaching news viewers what they are supposed to be doing to avoid having a police officer rub his dick on their face, Brown doesnt mention what sorts of efforts, if any, are underway to teach police officers about the role they might, perhaps, be able to play in keeping themselves from raping someone. Ive taken the liberty of compiling a list of tips of my own for any law enforcement officials who are worried that they might perhaps get into some hot water one day for sexually assaulting, molesting, or otherwise harassing citizens while on duty:
1. You probably shouldnt be a police officer if this is something you find yourself thinking about a lot.
2. You probably shouldnt even be a citizen. Consider leaving polite society and becoming a hermit, where the possibility that you will rape someone during a traffic stop is approximately zero.
3. If you must be a police officer, just dont pull people over.
4. If you must pull someone over, dont rape them. This is not difficult. Billions of people manage to interact with each other every day without raping one another. You can do it, too.
I dont expect my helpful rape prevention tips to get a lot of traction in Oklahoma, where a fundraising campaign for one of the arrested officers made $7,000 before getting shut down by undoubtedly horrified GoFundMe admins, and where Browns victim-blaming advice was cheerfully received and parroted by the local news anchor. But just dont get yourself into the situation is too often the advice on preventing rape. Its time to change the conversation.

Every time? Even in the examples given here?
I generally support law enforcement officers, but I can’t support raping women for committing traffic violations.
Do you hear me now?
If you are unsure, roll down your window only a crack and tell the officer you will drive to the nearest police station and talk with him there. Then drive (slowly) to the nearest police station.
Other option is tell them you will drive to the nearest shopping center or grocery store that is open and he can talk with you there.
So you would choose a cop who rapes over a woman who speeds?
If you can really determine ‘who’ is the criminal!
Those raping and killing good people aren’t LE. Good LE does what is necessary to take down criminals They that argue against LE support criminals against Good LE. Every LE group has its bad apples. Good LE agencies take them down. It is what Good LE does. I support Good LE and will forever over the criminals. Hear me yet?
Never said that and you know I didn’t say that.
” I support Good LE and will forever over the criminals.”

Me too.
.
If they wear a badge they are LE. Clean up your house instead of covering up for them.
Lumping women who may have been speeding with hard core criminals is a joke.
Yes you did. You should be condemning these cops instead of proclaiming how you support LE and always will.
Have never covered for LE. There are bad apples in all groups, including LE. Would you prefer I trust the criminals instead?
oh get a life.
There are more than two classes of people, LE and criminals.
Some LE are criminals but most aren’t. Just as most people are not criminals.
don’t disagree with that ...
This is another factor in favor of putting dash-cams in all police cars, plus making police wear audio/video recorders while on duty. This would both discourage officers from acting inappropriately, and also protect them from false accusations of inappropriate conduct.
Who do you choose when the public SERVANT is the criminal?
it will not be the public servant because that one claiming to be a public servant is not a public servant. I’ll choose LE to do what is right over a criminal anytime. What do you say?
Try again.
If it's wearing a cop uniform, and a cop badge, and drawing a paycheck from the local constabulary, it's LE. And it's a public servant. A very bad one, mind ... a criminal one ... but still a peace officer and a public servant.
Ill choose LE to do what is right over a criminal anytime.
What do you choose when LE IS the criminal?
There seems to be some debate in the comments at the site on whether he actually said this.
I don’t have time to investigate right now, though.

I looked this story up to see if he came out to offer a non-apology. First link I found was a fact checking article basically stating that the Captain didn’t say this. The anchor did. Looks like this officer was legitimately offering up some safety tips and what to expect when dealing with the police after being pulled over.

Here’s the video. Before the anchor says that, she distinctly says “he says” in reference to George Brown. And it is in a list of things a cop might say when giving advice to a woman who is pulled over. I don’t the anchor made up a quote to attribute it to him while not making up the three or four pieces of advice she conveyed on his behalf seconds before.

I looked into it, too. From what I saw, it seemed like the reporter was saying that the cop had said this, but off camera. That’s what I got out of it.
