Environmental scientists at the University of Nottingham have made a shocking and expensive discovery: eco-friendly buildings made of "sustainable" wood burn much more easily than eco-unfriendly ones made of stone, concrete, steel or glass.
They made their surprise discovery over the weekend when their new Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry burned to the ground in what local firemen claimed was the biggest blaze in over a decade.
The £15 million building had been erected according to the most rigorous environmental principles, made with a wooden frame and other "sustainable" materials, and powered with "renewable" energy, so that the structure could remain "carbon neutral" throughout its lifetime.
According to Nottingham's registrar Dr. Paul Greatrix this demonstrated the university's "commitment to sustainability in all its forms".

Tell them Enviro Scientist type that I have 10 cords for them to cut, split and stack and I need it done by Friday.
They were working on Eco-Friendly Fire Alarm System and Water Sprinkler System at the time of the fire(cough)
Sustainability is evidently unsustainable.
But Wood is a sustainable resource. And Stone is not.
Cause we just wouldn't want to run out of stone.
I suspect the university was stoned.
I was just thinking, don’t they require sprinkler systems in the UK?
Can’t help LMAO. Am I evil?
Or did they simply prove that oxidation is sustainable?
Let’s see...wood (as in firewood) is combustible! Jeez, when did I learn that? Oh yes when I was 6 camping with my family and I had to get sticks...
FWIW, a great many American buildings indeed are built using wood frame construction, and they arent all that flammable if done right.
The irony is off the scale...
The carbon neutral building probably put out more carbon than 10 regular buildings in a lifetime...when it burned....
You see, sprinkler systems require eeeevil man-made black iron pipes, eeeeeevil electric (or super eeeeevil diesel ones) water pumps and eeeevil man made plastic parts for alarms and control systems so they decide it wasn’t sustainable to use it.
By the way, I wonder how many hundreds of gallon of diesel was burned by the responding fire trucks?
>>> Cant help LMAO. Am I evil?
I had a chuckle, so I am ‘mini-me’.
“Cant help LMAO. Am I evil?”
If you are, then I am too.
Exactly. If you ever listed to scanner traffic for a really large fire, at some point they will have to bring in a fuel delivery truck to refill the tanks of the apparatus.
LOL, 3 points!
