lone bears hunting people as a source of food are the greatest cause of deadly maulings and related predatory attempts.

Canada.
If that had been here in Alaska, there would have been several .45-70s and/or 12ga shotguns handy.

On the other bear attack thread, the nature pros in the field said bear spray is best.
Was bear spray attempted here?

Sooooooo, they're in bear country and not one idiot had a gun? They're in bear country, but on employer's company premises.
I would not be surprised if employer had a "no guns at work" policy.

I went with my husband on quite a few bear hunts in Alberta and British Columbia, black bears and grizzly.
We were well armed, as you might guess. I can’t believe that these people were not.

Mace, security guards with guns, hornet spray even? Oh well. I guess i would not work in bear country if there were no weapons allowed.
On the other hand perhaps the inspiring psychologist tried to analyze the bear?

This bear was very determined .. the attack lasted about an hour.
Little brass bells nor bear spray would not have much difference.

Last week, a mountain lion was spotted in the vicinity of an elementary school near Mt. Vernon, Virginia. That area is hardly rural, and the last place you would expect to see such a thing. In the meantime, the kids at the school have been kept inside.

A number of people in the comments section bemoaned the lack of guns, but some people thought bear spray would have worked. But what if the bear spray doesn't work? Then what?
Apparently, it seems there are many people in Canada who are horrified at the idea that guns might be useful in some way. How many more deaths like that will it take for them to get over that feeling? I can understand their feelings in a civilized area with little or no crime, but in the wilderness with dangerous critters? Give me a break.

Lots of people denigrate the use of bear spray. I think it’s often a knee jerk macho reaction. A bears olafactory system is thousands of times more sensitive than a dog’s. I carry bear spray with me while bear hunting, along with a firearm.
