Paramount Pictures didnt know what they were giving up 40 years ago when they donated the 135-inch studio model of the U.S.S. Enterprisethe fictional, 23rd century starship at the center of the groundbreaking science fiction series Star Trekto the Smithsonian. Star Trek had been canceled after three seasons five years earlier; the first of the now 12 Trek motion pictures was still five years away. Though the first Star Trek convention had taken place in 1972, there was little reason to suspect the beloved but low-rated TV showunique for its optimistic vision of a future where men and women of all races and ethnicities, not to mention non-humans, merrily travel the galaxies together to seek out new life and new civilizationswould blossom into a 50-year multimedia franchise, and a model for every organized fandom to follow. (The 48th anniversary of the first episode of Star Treks original air date was earlier this week.)

The Enterprise studio model spent most of the years 2000-2014 on display in the basement of the museum's gift shop. (Eric Long, National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution)
Reminds me of my childhood. I miss Mr Spock..lol
ST Ping
Live Long on Phosphor!
I had seen this in the Smith as a kid in ‘74
likewise I ended up losing an entire portfolio of Apollo lithos 11 x 18 from Nasa - you could ask your congressman for a set....free
I recreated some of it - and ended up getting a signed Armstrong Collins and Aldrin...along with a personalized Eileen Collins....just for the asking
Just WOW!
Star Trek is a great franchise... I hope another ST will be on the network soon..without the liberal bw...
I was a few yrs younger and only remember it from mid 70s. But definitely a fan of the original series & characters. Spock was a fav & ‘beam me up, Scotty’..

I remember watching the episode, “Amok Time”, when I was 6 years old (original broadcast). I remember being so amazed at Mr. Spock’s keen thought processes, and wanting to grow up to be just like him.
My ears never did become pointy. But Mr. Spock remained my hero.
I guess dilithium crystals are harder to obtain since China has clamped down on exports of key resources.
Fascinating. I was 18 when I first saw Amok Time in the original run in the 60s. T’Pring, Spocks fiancee, Played by Arlene Martel recently passed august 12th at 78. Great Show. I also enjoy the new rebooted movies.
They will sell if you have enough gold-plated latinum.
Yes, I remember her. Her thought processes were keen, as well.
Loved the original series found the next generation unwatchable with all the pc crap. Deep Space 9 was crappy until Babylon 5 got them to ramp up their game. Always loved Quark!
That makes two of us. B5 changed a lot of Sci fi for the better.
I liked the back and forth between Quark and constable Odo.
