It could help another wave of devices connect up to The Internet of Things and beam data back to the Web.
The smart homes of the future require gadgets that can communicate with the Internet as well as with each other. As technology such as this ant-sized radio gets cheaper and more lightweight, it can be built into more devices the team behind the new invention is hoping that it can help push innovation in wearables and smart hardware.
The next exponential growth in connectivity will be connecting objects together and giving us remote control through the Web, says Arbabian, who recently demonstrated the capabilities of his chip at an exhibition in Hawaii. How do you put a bi-directional wireless control system on every lightbulb?By putting all the essential elements of a radio on a single chip that costs pennies to make.

Or Bill’s vignette above...
There is no end to the potential for abuse and control.
People think those wine fridges are convenient but wait until they talk.
Never mind the appliances, though... the labels on everything will rat us out. Food, alcohol, reading material, clothing. Or just go to Amazon and search for an item you bought oh, close to a decade ago. “They” know even more than Bill’s terlit!
“I stopped at the same word. I am a software guy, but I am not going to have my things reporting back to the internet om me.”
If you are a software guy, you should know that they probably already do. The number of items in my house that connect to the plain old Internet is astounding.
if it could solve the mystery of the missing socks, i could be satisfied... might be worth it to me... :)
My opinion is the internet of things will be pitched towards women and they are more gullible about such conveniences. I base this on the incessant radio advertising I hear for Chase online banking using your smart phone. Other online banks are in it too to lock in customers.
The kind of woman who are working and have children will want this internet of things they can control remotely.
So how popular will it be when the HVAC system starts reporting on what it smells in the air? And not just marijuana smoke or crack fumes. How about a report on a perfume in the air not found in your wife’s inventory?
I can see this going wrong very fast.
Sky et, here we come!
Okay.
You're weird.
Happy now?
Yep, I keep getting notices from Comcast (America’s most loved company) to “upgrade” my router. This is so they can run a public wi-fi site from my location. I’ll try to delay this until they decide to break the service in order to compel the “upgrade”.
I’m a software guy also and don’t trust the internet of things in the least.
Excellent!
How about a hacker group in Nigeria demanding $100M to turn our 'frigerators back on?
Is there a black market yet for “dumb” appliances?
Electronic sales/exchange trails must obviously be avoided. Guess when our old fridges, washers, and dryers die we’ll have to scope out places off the Google street view monitors and look for petroglyphs indicating the secret places where we may discover these old icons of civilization.
Envisioning the famous Maytag repairman as the old man on Logan’s Run.
LOL, what is it? Rap video? SNL skit? Maytag commercial in the hood? Are those scrubs he’s wearing?
Could have been a scene out of Sanford and Son. One of Lamont’s friends..

Another of Obamas Secret Sons!
They probably want to control the QoS settings for me.
