Besser warned parents to watch out for symptoms of coughs and wheezing among their children, especially if their children are asthmatic.

"The best approach for prevention is what we talk about all the time for respiratory infections, colds, and flus and that's really good hand washing," Besser said.

...

Children who contract enterovirus D68 first suffer from what appears to be a common cold, with symptoms including a runny nose, coughing, and sneezing, according to Besser.

The symptoms then escalate to difficulty breathing. Besser said parents should look out for their children exhibiting signs of wheezing, difficulty eating or speaking, and blueness around the lips.

Doctors have found a way to treat the symptoms, helping kids breath more easily so they can get through the virus, Besser said.

"It's the same medicine that's used for children who have asthma," he said. "But when I was in the emergency room this week in St. Louis, they were giving it to children

"It's very hard for a virus to be limited by borders," Besser said. "I expect that it's going to hit the whole country."

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

This rare virus just appeared out of nowhere.

And it just happened to appear when the kids, and their new mates from Central America, went back to school. What a freaking coincidence.

Funny thing, did not the EPA recently ban the inhalers that were so effective at treating asthma?

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Please provide evidence that EV-D68 is any more prevalent in Central America than anywhere else. Hint: It is rare everywhere, was first identified in the U.S. in about 1962, similar viruses usually strike during summer like this one, and the evidence I asked for doesn't exist.

I think that borders is the key word here...was this enterovirus brought into our country as the result of Obama’s lack of control over our southern border....thousands of minors came into the U.S. unrestrained and brought with them whatever they had...shirts, pants, skirts, shoes, viruses......

I agree.

As you said, this has been around since 1962. Many were probably infected then but just chalked it up to having a cold. People were more infection resistant.

I think there are lots of diseases being brought over the border but this probably isn’t one of them. It is hype by the media to scare people.

“Please provide evidence that EV-D68 is any more prevalent in Central America than anywhere else.”

There clearly is circumstantial evidence. IE: The timing of this outbreak. Circumstantial is the best you are ever going to get.

Of course you can stick your head in the sand...

Many schools in the northeast don’t open until after Labor Day. Now, the virus is showing up there. That would indicate that it’s spreading in the schools. That would mean there’s a real good chance it’s the Central American hordes that have brought this gift with them.

Please provide evidence that EV-D68 is any more prevalent in Central America than anywhere else.

In Latin America as in other regions, HRVs and HEVs account for a substantial proportion of respiratory viruses identified in young people
