I like 2001: A Space Odyssey. Most of the music was not written for the film, but it matches perfectly.

2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY - From Earth to the Moon - Blue Danube

Aram Khachaturian - Gayane: Adagio

The music you hear in 2001 is the temp score.

Kubrick liked the temp score so much that he wanted to use it for the released version of the film. However, MGM wanted an original score.

Kubrick then contracted Alex North to do the score. North, who was one of the great film composers, had worked with Kubrick on Spartacus.

North composed the score for the film.

However, when North attended the premier screening, he discovered that Kubrick had abandoned his score and had used the temp score instead.

Needless to say, North was upset.

Some have said that Kubrick made the right decision. I have the CD and have listened to it several times, and I agree.
