ARLINGTON, Texas -- Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said Sunday he's concerned about the lack of African-American players and managers in baseball.

In the last few weeks, two African-American managers left the game in Houston's Bo Porter, who was fired, and on Friday, Texas' Ron Washington resigned, leaving McClendon as the only black man as a manager.

That is hoowey. Ill bet you right now that blacks are more than 12% of baseball player population. Why don’t you worry about an EMP this 9/11?

Ban steroids in football and basketball, then the only remaining sport will be soccer.

I am also concerned about the lack of people with a brain surrounding the feckless fool on the hill. Are you concerned about that? Affirmative action in action. What ever happened to freedom your doltness? Does freedom even matter anymore? If they don't want to play football, who the hell are you to tell them what they should do? So why are you not putting them in chains and sending them to forced baseball camps so you can meet you imaginary quota on the baseball field? Freedom? Freedom to you always starts with a color.

All professional baseball players are men

Blacks make up about 12% of the population

Assume that 15 = 50% men and 50% women so 6% of the population is black men

There are 25 men on a baseball team

25 X 0.06 = 1.5 black players per team

More than that ans they are over represented

That was the greatest thing he ever did as Manager of the Pirates. I still laugh when I see him “stealing” second base. One other little tidbit about Lloyd, he is probably the all time greatest little league world series player ever. He went something like 5 for 5 and all of them were homeruns. The rest of the time he was intentionally walked.

I wish he had stayed in Detroit after Jim Leyland left.

Next Sunday is Jewish Heritage day at Comerica park.

Maybe he could get Michele Obama to decree that no Black boys can have her school lunches free unless they play baseball.

So who gets the blame for Ron Washington suddenly quitting?

You math is faulty. Black men still make up about 12% of the male population (using your 50/50 split).

Further, since baseball players come from around the world, the percentages of US population aren't relevant.

Lloyd,

What a terribly racist statement for you to make. Wonder how the non-black players on your team feel?

Stop such stupid racist remarks and get on with managing the team.

What a racist jerk!

Houston is 17 games under .500 and Texas is 35 games under.

Washington would have been fired if he didn’t resign.

With those types of records the manager usually gets the boot.

Just the way it is.

Washington would have been fired if he didn’t resign.

Not so.

Injuries shredded a team which had legitimate expectations of post-season play. The worst run of injuries I've seen in fifty years. As of today, there are 14 players on the DL -- twelve of them on the 60-day DL.

The Rangers' front office does not hold Washington responsible.

35 games under .500 is the reason Washington is gone.

He resigned before they fired him, and his statement was typically confusing, talking about having to take care of a “personal problem”

McClendon trying to make this a racial issue says a lot about the state of race relations in the country.

For years the was the sentiment that blacks couldn’t manage, now plenty have been give the chance but if ANY manager isn’t winning, they are gone, and it’s not a racial thing.

There are plenty of blacks from the Dominican Republic, from the Caribbean islands, from Venezuela and other countries in that neck of the woods now in the Majors and plenty more in the minors.

Lloyd is just trying to grease the skids for his homies here in the U.S. Hey, the guy can’t dribble, let him play baseball - not going to happen that way Lloyd.

It has become more global. Players from Latin America have been dominant for decades. Now, players from Asia are making an impact. African Americans AND whites are being edged out. It’s based on if you can play or not.

Actually if you read the article McClendon just says the decrease in AMERICAN black players is concerning, which is true.

Baseball is the American game and MLB is taking steps to make it more available in areas that don’t have programs.

There are many black hispanics in the majors.

You’re right.
But then there should 3 to 4 American Blacks on each team and I think there are that many

Any whites worried about the lack of proportional representation of Caucasians in the NBA and NFL?
