Next thing as far as the money end of it goes isn't file sharing. If someone likes the music chances are they will buy as good of quality as they can get. The issues usually are the recording/promotion companies and their own personal management who take big chunks off the top. Lot's of groups and musicians ended up broke even with multi top ten records because of this. It doesn't even have to be an artist who lives beyond their means. The industry itself rips them off. That is true whether it's Rock, Country, etc because usually it's still the same companies.
I've likely bought from retail most music I like several times over. Some I can't find due to licensing issues preventing a new release. A lot of good music disappeared in the transition between Vinyl, to Cassette, to CD formats.
I do Rip all music I have to my HD then for places like my vehicle burn copies. That is legal and common sense and should not ever be forbidden.
Where are the artist missing the boat money wise? Where do people go to too watch bands or musicians for free? YouTUBE. You can see a lower quality video and you may really like it. Now go and try and find it retail in a better quality. YOuTube has some video recording that are not in any other format. An example is Grand Funk Railroad singing Locomotion. The best recording of it is on Youtube but it's two bands. Grand Funk and Wet Willie together on stage.
The companies and artist need to step up their game somewhat. KISS? Every band eventually runs it's course as far as sales go. Some stay near the top for decades with albums like Dark Side of The Moon. Some stay around a few month and are one hit wonders. A lot of the 70's groups still play to smaller venues like theme parks, county fairs, etc.. They likely make more money doing that then they did when their records were played non stop. People pay to come to hear the artist.
Most modern rock is murder anyways.

While they were canned junk, rock artists did indeed write and produce their own materials but that seems to have fallen by the wayside......
all that's left now is rap crap, and tit and butt shakin'...........
50 years from now they'll still be playing the songs from the 50's and 60's.........
IMHO there is very little real talent left in popular music. The music industry can make a star out of anyone (think Disney).

In a sense, that’s been true for many decades. The most popular acts always got the best studios, the best producers, songwriters, session musicians if they needed them, and who knows what else.
I am of the opinion that if their stuff is good enough to buy, then they don’t have a problem.
The problem is when it’s not. How many of you have bought an LP of some band that you like, and had maybe 1 or 2 tunes that you actually liked on that record with the other 10 or 11 tracks being garbage? I have hundreds of these records and I view file sharing as a sort of restitution for all of the crap that they have sold over the years.
File sharing/pirating is for the most part, stuff that the down-loader wouldn’t have bought anyway, so they re not out anything.
My three sons are in their late teens—early twenties. They listen almost exclusively to Classic Rock. They can’t bring themselves to admit that their generation has almost nothing when it comes to listenable music, but what they listen to speaks for itself.
I remember when I bought Herman's Hermits as a kid and Henry The Eighth was A side and End of the world was B side. I liked both. The most Different B-side recording made? The original flip side of "They're coming to take me away". They didn't have any material to record so it was simply recorded backwards.
Not only that...they’d put a couple hits in with mostly crap music, so we’d be stuck with mostly crap music. Makes a big diff when we can now be selective of the cuts.

Remember those tangled balls of tape along the roadsides? Sort of like high-tech tumbleweeds.
Those cheapskates did the same thing with pre-recorded VHS tapes.

Oh yea, forgot that...paid for a LOT MORE songs than I ever cared to listen to.

Oh yea, and we didn’t have a choice...we couldn’t buy their product on the higher quality tapes, the ones with the small screws...nope, it was crappy tapes or nothing. I will not be sad to see the labels go the way of the dinosaurs.
