It all depends on the alcohol proof. 60% is nothing.

As a laboratory researcher, I would use 95% for disinfection purposes. We used gallons of the stuff every month.

Isopropanol and ethanol are interchangeable for disinfection purposes.

Not just the midwest: http://fox10tv.com/2014/08/29/31025/ MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – University of South Alabama Children’s & Women’s Hospital, as well as pediatric hospitals nationwide, are seeing high volumes of children with respiratory illness causing symptoms ranging from the common cold to wheezing and severe respiratory distress.

I'm not especially well informed on the topic of lab disinfection but reading Guideline for Disinfection and Sterilization in Healthcare Facilities taught me a little.

I just bought oregano oil the other day but can’t remember where the website was that had its antiviral uses listed. All I know is that it’s a good decongestant if mixed with hot water and the steam inhaled. What are your suggestions?

I’ve been longing for the days when ladies went everywhere with gloves. What a practical idea that was! The heat of summer not withstanding...Combined with the fact that personal hygiene was better overall pre-1960’s, I imagine colds and flu of various sorts were not as prevalent in those days. Wonder if there is any statistical data out there to check.

I’ve always been a bit of a trendsetter, maybe I’ll see if I can bring it back. ;)

It has been a fun,sad and a hard 35yrs.
I have seen some wonderful kids die from,CF,various forms of Leukemia and other cancers, drownings, asthma you name it.
I was surprised to find out one child who I thought for sure had died from liver cancer was now an adult and doing well. Many you loose track of over the years
I have now been seeing the children of former pt’s and it is wild to say I took care of your father when he was 3 yrs old and boy was he a pistol!
Some are in jail and some have died in the violent neighborhoods they call home.

And thank you for asking me.You made me think back on those early days.

I have a stack of gloves that were my grandmothers. Embroidered ones, plain ones, leather ones. Lovely habit that was. It also kept the back of their hands looking young since they also functioned as sunscreen.

Is alcohol a better choice for the grocery cart than the wipes?

I had the same thing - never had a cold like that before. Had to get antibiotics for pharyngitis, and prednisone. I was still coughing for weeks.

90% of the time our grocery doesn’t have the antibacterial wipes. Maybe use hand sanitizer on the handle and the seat since that’s easy to carry in the purse sized bottles. I’ve often thought they should send each cart through a cart wash after each use.

Alcohol kills some things, but not everything. The same is true of bleach and hydrogen peroxide, and probably every other kind of disinfectant that exists.

No matter what kind of wipe you use, if you wipe the cart, wipe the handle bar thoroughly and then fold the wipe to capture the dirt inside or use a new wipe if you want to wipe again. Your goal is to remove visible dirt, since dirt traps a lot of microorganisms.

The best thing I can tell you is to wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap, and to try to be aware of when and how you touch your face. People touch their faces quite often. You probably don’t want to rub your eye just after you’ve touched a surface that other people touch all day long—like an escalator handrail. Wash for 15 seconds or so, making sure to lather up thoroughly and clean under the nails, then either use the back of your hand to turn off the faucet or dry your hands with a paper towel and use the towel to turn off the faucet.

Those little hand sanitizers are okay in a pinch, but you should not use them more than once or twice before you wash your hands again.

Thanks, FRiend. I will follow your instructions.

Fortunately, my mother raised her 9 kids to be careful about germs. First thing I do when I walk into the house is wash my hands. And in a public restroom my elbow probably picks up a lot of germs from the faucets and light switches.
