Apple promises iCloud security alerts, better 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication)

Apple plans to roll out new iCloud security alerts as well as extending its two-step authentication technology in the wake of this week's privacy flap over nude selfies of Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and other celebs.

Private pictures of disrobed (female) celebrities including Oscar winner Lawrence and swimwear model Upton surfaced on 4Chan and anonymous image board AnonIB over the weekend. It seems that in many cases miscreants siphoned off nude snaps stored on victims' iCloud accounts, among other locations.

Metadata in the pictures suggested that many of the leaked photos were taken with iPhones and Apple's backup feature has therefore been implicated in the leak, which came from a collection of images put together by several people who may have traded them between themselves.

Apple acknowledged that a "targeted attack" on "user names, passwords and security questions" had taken place earlier this week, advising users to "always use a strong password and enable two-step verification" as a defence.

However, as previously reported, turning on Apple's two factor-authentication technology wouldn't have blocked the attack apparently behind this week's celebrity nude selfie leak. Apple's 2FA is necessary (when enabled) to make iTunes purchases or to get support from Apple.

So, although Apple initially said turning on two-factor authentication would have saved everyone, the truth is, Apple didn't implement it where it mattered.

Originally titled, "Apple promises iCloud security alerts, better 2FA after, er, NAKED Internet of Thingies flap." But that was pretty long and unnecessarily suggestive...

Interesting timing.

Just got an email from Microsoft that someone is trying - and failing - to access my Hotmail account.

Apparently, I have two-factor ID.

They challenge the bogus “me” with a demand for the last 4 numbers of my phone.

If he gets that right, then they instantly call my real phone and deliver a seven digit code, which must be typed in before email access is granted.

Since I use my home computer 99% of the time, they exempt this computer from the phone code.

Yawn.

Even though off site storage becomes too expensive to maintain affordabley every time it’s tried, there is always a new huck sterling a d some new suckers. Security aside, in a few years it will be suddenly discontinued and those who relied on it alone will lose their data.

I’m with you.

IMHO, the cloud is a very dangerous place and hasn’t even begun to prove it’s trustworthy.

Therefore I urge all my friends to not store ANYTHING of a sensitive, personal nature on the cloud.
