You don’t mean that it is not just a chemical imbalance?

So we are back to square 1 and don’t really know what causes clinical depression.

Just because they increase people’s seratonin does not necessarily mean that a person’s depression was caused by lack of seratonin. I always assumed it was felt that extra seratonin helped with whatever was making them depressed. Just like pain is not caused by “lack of painkillers”.

A general collapse in SSRI sales volume would undoubtedly cause many people to become depressed.

It's widely believed that people with depression don't make enough serotoninI don't think that's the true.
The problem is IIRC that the serotonin released by the pre-symaptic neuron which is intended to be release into the synapse and absorb by the post-synaptic neuron is, in a depressed persons brain, reabsorbed by the pre-synaptic neuron thereby preventing it from reaching the post-synaptic neuron.
Hence the name SSRI for some antidepressants. SSRI is an acronym which stands for Selective Serotonin RE-UPTAKE INHIBITOR.

So all those SSRIs that have been prescribed were for naught?
Other than enriching the pharmaceutical companies, and driving a number of unfortunate souls to mass-murder?

There is a lot we don't know about depression (and mental illness in general). What we do know is illnesses like depression (or other mental illness) are real, genetically-rooted biological illnesses, just like diabetes. The difference is these illnesses affect the brain and thus complex behaviors. Sadly, research into mental illnesses is far behind research for other illnesses. Because I have a son who is affected, I have been teaching and am Program Director for a 12-week family education course developed by NAMI called
Family-to-Family. If any of my fellow Freepers have loved ones living with mental illness, I highly recommend this course. Education is key as there is so much misunderstanding and just plain ignorance out there about these illnesses.
