How RAK, UAQ police saved the day

A 22-year-old Emirati woman was saved by police after her car was stuck in cruise control at 120kmph while she was heading from Sharjah to Ras Al Khaimah.

Police risked their lives when they drove their vehicle in front of Aysha Hassan and told her to bang her car in the rear of their vehicle to slow it down.

The frightened Aysha was reluctant to this but the trick worked and her car stopped. The woman's brakes stopped working near the National Paints Bridge in Sharjah.

She phoned Umm Al Quwain police, who tried to calm her down before sending patrols to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, where she was heading.

“One of them phoned me again and told me that he would drive in front of me while another police car was behind me,” she said.

“The policeman then told me he would slow down so my car will bang into his vehicle. I was scared and tried to dodge his vehicle but I had no choice. I hit the police vehicle and may car came to a standstill.”

She said traffic police from Umm Al Quwain, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah joined hands to calm her down through the plight and save her life.

“She was screaming. She was in a bad psychological state but we tried our best to calm her down before acting to stop her car,” said Major Sultan bin Youkha, acting director of Umm Al Quwain traffic police.

Should have rammed it into the nearest brick building with swords embedded in the walls and pointing out, with the swords all dripping with lye and the rabid Rottweilers that guard the building but the Rottweilers have killer bees in their fur and the bees come out all angry and they have little tiny running chainsaws.

"Put the car in neutral."

She couldn't do that....that would require her to take the phone away from her ear....!

Exactly! My god, how could you get a license and not know the purpose of the fng gearshift!

Plus, unless some genius engineer on some car I don’t know of has designed his model otherwise, all cars engines stop by simply turning off the key!!!

Ladies! Put the car in neutral and turn off the key so the engine won’t over-rev and blow up!

And do it quick!

This would be great for the plot of a movie with Sandra Al-Bullock.

And the bees bark but when they bark they emit huge plumes of flame which attract the zombies who each carry muskets and the zombies fire in unison which causes the drones overhead to launch the Hellfire missiles at the zombies targets and the Hellfires are all coated with sharp pointy razor blades.

Very ouch-ey.

Jump out...buy lots of band-aids.

Like your plan ... refuse the kool-aid too. Lord only knows where the kool-aid is from.

” turn off the key so the engine won’t over-rev and blow up!”

Most cars now have rev limiters. Leave the engine running to keep steering and braking.

That's because you Shermans drive on the wrong side of the road.

If the steering wheel is on the right side of the car, the key is out of the passenger's reach.

You can not remove the key and lock the wheel unless the gear selector is in park. It is impossible as there is a mechanical lockout just for this purpose.

(Almost all) modern cars have rev-limiters. If they are run full-throttle and no load, the electronics (rev-limiter) will go a long way to save them. Older engines, on American cars, are rev-limited by valve float. It is amazing how much full-throttle , no load screaming (sometime with massive coolant loss) can happen, and then the engine runs fine for years after. Don’t ask how I know this.

push like a mad man and eventually you’ll get below it’s lowest allowed speed (by the programming, mine is 30 MPH)

I hate the 25MPH minimum on my car. My last car had no minimum, which was nice for setting a legal (if otherwise impossible to hold) speed of 20 MPH in a school zone.

I just tested this on my 02 Tacoma. My prior statement was based on ‘80’s experience.
I could not get the steering wheel to lock while in Drive, in my driveway.

thanks for that comment! I didn’t know that. Even though as a kid I raced boats and cars and built engines. I’ve lost touch with those type details.

I do know that my car when stuck in very little mud will basically shut down. When I back out of the garage in the morning, the accelerator won’t work and so on.

Thanks for the info. Very informative.

I still wonder about the key though. Can you still just turn off the key in a situation like that or has the computer taken over that too?

Yes. You can still shut off the engine by turning the key. You just can’t remove the key from the ign unless you are in park. And so long as you don’t remove the key, your steering wheel won’t lock.
GM has been having the problem of the key turning itself off if your key chain is too heavy.
