'Cops' Crew Member Killed by Officers While Show Films Armed Robbery (Omaha)

A staffer on the long-running television crime show Cops was shot and killed Tuesday night, reportedly by gun fire from local police, while videotaping an armed robbery in progress in Omaha, Nebraska, that also left the suspect dead.

According to Deputy Chief David Baker of the Omaha Police Department, the incident took place at a Wendy's restaurant at around 9:20 p.m. CT, in the vicinity of 42nd Street and Dodge.

Initial reports said the TV crew member, later identified by Langley Productions (which produces Cops) as audio technician Bryce Dion — had been critically injured. The news of his death broke Wednesday morning, as first reported by the Omaha World-Herald and local NBC affiliate WOWT. The Omaha PD has declined to name the victims or release any further details pending an afternoon press conference, at which Cops creator John Langley is expected to speak.

More than 30 shots were fired, all by officers, according to law enforcement sources that spoke with the World-Herald and WOWT, implying that Omaha police killed both the suspect and the crew member. No officers were injured.

30 shots. 30?

Are you out of your mind? ANY soldier or Marine with few month’s training doesn’t rounds like that on one adversary. This is an astounding reaction from supposedly well-trained peace officers working around citizen bystanders.

More like cowardice.

I don’t fault the cops for shooting the robber. I fault the cops for allowing the sound man to be there and for shooting him.

In the situation that has been described, after they entered their attention was on the perp and not on where the cameraman was positioned. It sounds like the cameraman whom I believe was hit in the head was possibly ducking when the round hit him. If that is true it is possible that he would have been hit in his ballistic vest if he was not taking cover. The cops had no way to control where he was at and he obviously thought at first he was not in a vulnerable position. Watch the show a few times and it becomes obvious that the cops concentrate on the criminal and the cameraman has a lot of freedom of movement about the scene.

I was an enlisted Marine, I know about controlled fire on target. This is not in the open combat. It is a closed and small area and when the criminal opens fire and moves in a threatening manner you fire until the criminal is down. It is split second with little time to change what comes from automated muscle memory once the actions are started. They seem to have reacted appropriately. This isn’t a scripted TV show it’s real life. Three police firing an average of 10 rounds apiece in a two to three second period to neutralize a threat. Doesn’t sound like cowardice to me. In this case, go find another soapbox.

keep your bias to yourself

Bias? The a-holes shot and killed THE WRONG MAN during a volley of undisciplined gunfire against someone who had an Airsoft gun.

Obvious is obvious and it is not biased to say so.

Yeah, bias. Your a-holes comment makes that apparent. After viewing the film footage the chief and the Cops producer said that the police officers responded professionally, not undisciplined gunfire. Range experience is disciplined fire. This is a real life tactical situation that start to finish is less than 15 seconds; not you or me or anyone else firing on the range under controlled conditions so get off of your soapbox.

You’re forgetting the little girl in Detroit.
Shot through the neck while she slept on a couch.
RIP.

You or I would not be cut a break for shooting this person accidentally. Neither should someone else, magic blue suit notwithstanding.

20/20 hindsight.

I read you, and equally critical of many police officers in articles posted here, but the scenario painted by witnesses & the story is simply a tragic accident brought about by a stupid person with a fake gun.

I can’t fault the officers here.

Research ‘stress-induced tunnel vision’.

Soapbox? A completely innocent guy’s dead and it’s just tough luck because the cops involved had “muscle memory”? In your enthusiasm for our police protectors you seem to have lost some perspective. Allegedly, they are supposed to “protect and serve” not go all mad moment one one clown in a fast food restaurant.

Would you have accepted that kind of performance from a fellow Marine? I wouldn’t have. Combat takes courage, not just “muscle memory”.

If you or I were shooting to defend ourselves or others in a situation like this and a bystander was shot the criminal, if he lived, would be charged with murder by his actions. If the criminal is a threat to me and others around me I will pump rounds until he doesn’t move. I’ll take the chance with a grand jury and jury rather than take a chance on being killed in the split second it would take to think about it.

Again, pack your bias (magic blue suit) and take it elsewhere.

The video and audio indicates that the Airsoft shots did indeed sound real

Huh? I've heard plenty of Airsoft shots and none of them sound like real gunfire - unless you think the Airsoft gun is a suppressed firearm.

And you can see an Airsoft projectile in flight - even coming towards you.

That said, I can imagine that under the stress of the situation the Airsoft shooter could appear to be firing a real firearm.

sad, but he knew the risks and operated with the cops and took a ricochet. Dumb luck.

Hang on a second. Look at a few things. Innocent? He committed no crime that is true. He did however place himself into a high risk situation filming this show. BTW I’m not a fan of the show I think the idea of putting a camera crew on calls is a disaster just waiting to happen. IOW bad idea to start with. While others near by if they could would be putting as much distance between them and the criminal as possible this guys job was to stay put thus assumed risk on his own part was also a factor. They filmed hundreds of shows over the years and sooner or later the odds were bound to play out.

Gotcha. The cameraman wasn’t innocent - he chose a particular job that put him in direct contact with America’s finest crazed shooters. His fault for being in the same zip code as cops with semiautos. Makes sense. Probably should have shot the guy for even choosing that job.

Silly me. All this time I thought cops were courageous sorts whose mission is to save lives while catching bad guys. Turns out all that has morphed to “shoot like crazy in all directions then go home”.

Should have known better when I watched those idiot cops at Columbine. All armored up, state of the art weaponry, total cowards -meter maids with machineguns.
