Let's set aside the fact that betting on his team and going deep into debt with bookies makes him a juicy blackmail target, as well as those who have rightfully pointed out how his gambling can affect his managerial decisions and the integrity of the game. Instead, does the fact that his admission was made in a sensationalized book that he was hawking mean anything? After all, most people who are truly contrite don't try to shamelessly profit off of their acts of contrition.
Also, what is your take on the fact that he brutally slandered John Doud, the lead investigator who authored the report for 15+ years? History has completely vindicated Doud and his report, yet Rose has yet to apologize to him.
Oh come on. During Bowie Kuhn’s time as COMISH, Baseball got caught robbing the HOF and selling memorabilia from their collection. What is worse betting on oneself of stealing?
I agree sometimes relativism isn’t a great excuse. However, this is a game here, and I don’t enjoy it any more because of this BS. I enjoyed watching ROBO Clemens play and the fact that he had so much pain he took meds to keep him in the game he loved seemed not to of interest for a congress to go after him instead of the IRS scandals, Fast and Furious, waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayer money and many more pressing REAL EMERGENCIES.
I elect you Pope, you can judge and scold. Me, let the great players play and give me a bowl of beer nuts and a six pack of cold suds and I will be a happy camper
Good points.
Rose played at a time before the million dollar contract...Long before...In fact, he was on the cover of SI
when he signed his contract making him the first 6 figure singles hitter.
When Rose made the admission in 2004, he was under the impression that baseball would make an accommodation with him that would allow him to rejoin baseball in some capacity. As we all know that never happened.
As far as affecting the integrity of the game, there has never been any evidence advanced that even remotely suggests that Rose ever attempted to affect the outcome of a game that he managed in an effort to enhance his betting position.
