By this point, you have made up your own mind, as so many of us have. You are from one of two camps. One is the "hasn't Pete suffered enough? The other is the "Pete got exactly what he deserved"

To hell with Pete Rose. He was classless then. He’s classless now.
If old Charlie Hustle PR had been more humble and contrite when the gambling was first revealed he could have averted the mess. Andy Petitte fessed up and was contrite publicly about his use of HGH/ drug enhancements and its all gone and forgotten about and it won’t stain his career legacy.
Rose chose the arrogant, stiff necked response and its still biting him back these many years.
Depends on what it is that gets recognized. Does the individual’s skill in and of itself be the criteria for recognition, or is personal honor, courage, and commitment a part of the prerequisite? (think: Lou Gehrig)
Of course, these days, we are slouching into a post-Christian age where those three characteristics are considered passé, so I guess one shrugs their shoulders and says “Eh! Sure! Why not?”

I'm curious. Is Pete Rose suffering? Is he broke? Homeless? Suffering from some catastrophic illness? I see him on tv and he looks good to me.
Not being in the Hall of Fame doesn't fit my definition of suffering.
It would be sad if “The Hall” played such a huge factor in players’ post-career lives as these articles suggest.

Rose has lied about his role every step of the way and if his lips are moving, he's lying now. If Rose is to be admitted, admit Shoeless Joe Jackson, then wait 90 years to admit Rose.
I agree with you on all but Roger Clemons.
Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.
Integrity and character? Missing totally.
Rose's records are already in the Hall of Fame. Rose, as a person, does not belong there.
And what everyone is ignoring is that Pete Rose agreed to his lifetime suspension from baseball.
It is a huge conflict of interest that he bet on his own team. The very best teams in baseball win only about 60% of their games. The very worst teams stil win about 40% of their games. Most teams are fairly close to 50%.
On any given day, the chances of winning are very dependent on the matchup of pitchers. A starting pitcher can only pitch about once every five days. Most teams #1 pitcher is much better than their #4 or #5 pitchers.
A bit baseball manager’s job is to time their pitching rotations to gain an edge in the most possible games. If a manager can give up one probable loss, where their #5 pitcher goes against another teams #1 pitcher, it may be worth it to get 2 or 3 games where they will have an edge (your #1 pitcher goes against their #2, your #2 pitcher goes against their #3). Everyone in the organization is counting on the manager making those kind of day-to-day decisions with the single-minded goal of maximizing the total number of wins for the team.
Pete Rose was a manager for the Reds. Pete Rose controlled the starting lineups and pitching rotation for the Reds. If he is betting money on the Reds winning in a given day, he has a strong incentive to use his best pitchers on days when they are really not needed to improve the chances of winning on that single day, rather than helping the team win the most games over the course of season.
Pete Rose denied for years what he did, despite the weight of the evidence. Even though he has now admitted it, he has never really come clean about the extent, or apologized completely for it. I’m not ready to say he should be in the Hall of Fame.
Yup, and he also vehemently attacked the integrity of every person involved in the investigation. I'm from Cincinnati and he was my favorite player as a kid, but I'd never let him in.
The comments on this thread describe America today. Good is evil and evil is good. There is no right or wrong. Just do what ever feels good to you. No wonder our nation is in such a mess. Lie, cheat, steal. Who cares?
Thanks for posting that. If Rose ever makes it in before he dies, we’ll know that it was a political decision, not based on the Hall of Fame’s own stated criteria.
Of course, these days, sadly, nothing is done by the books anymore. Our institutions are now oh so progressive.
Hmm. Just realized something...were Pete Rose one of Holder’s people, Obama would have written an EO by now putting him the Hall of Fame.
The response to the question says more about the responder than the question itself. The conflict is between head and heart. Those who want to let Pete into the hall reflect emotional thinking, while those who would keep him out are using sound reasoning and logic. Unfortunately for our country as a whole, the reason and logic is only located within a small minority on the right side of the aisle. I contend that the underlying reason for our mess is rampant emotional thinking that dominates both sides of the aisle.
He agreed to a lifetime ban if MLB would not release its evidence on Rose's betting. That should give us all an idea about just what kind of evidence exists. Does anyone really this we're talking about simply betting on the Reds to win?

He did the WORST possible thing to the game of baseball - put its reputation in jeopardy. He bet on baseball and worse, he bet on his own team.

As a player, he deserves first-ballot unanimous. No question. But he threw all that away with gambling as a manager, betting on his own team.
