James Foley was one of a new breed of activists calling themselves journalists. He didn’t travel to report on a story, but to promote an agenda. And the agenda was obvious from his Twitter feed.

Greenfield’s piece needs much more documentation re what Foley “wrote” about Israel, FSA, etc.
Too many generalities and generalities DO NOT establish an article’s credibility.
As some wise scribe once said (paraphrasing), “The value is in the detail”.
That’s hardly proof of anything. Remember the captured Fox reporter who ‘converted’ to Islam? None of us has the foggiest of notions what preceded that taping, and to take anything he said in it as truth of Foley’s sentiments is fairly naive.
Well, permit me to comment on possible objections to my question.
Pyle was with a front-line American military unit. Foley was not. Foley was on his own. But does that mean no journalist should cover a story unless the American military is involved?
Pyle's America was in a declared war. Foley's America was not. But again, does that mean no journalist should cover a story unless there is a declared war?
Bottom line (unless I see hard evidence to the contrary): Both Pyle and Foley were brave men dedicated to their professions. Both men took risks, and both men lost.
That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his own agenda, and isn’t capable of a spin, or mis-reading what was happening. I’m just not comfortable with this piece.
I am very uncomfortable with how the article portrayed Foley. Lots of accusations, very little evidence.
But I will agree with your statement above. Ernie Pyle was a great American, a magnificent American. My father, a WWII vet, spoke of Ernie Pyle more than once.
If this is true then why didn’t obama move Heaven and Earth to rescue him?

There is truth in that. And here's something else to think about. Years ago I read the autobiography of Francis Gary Powers, the U2 pilot who was shot down and captured by the Soviets.
Powers writes that he was told by his superiors to either commit suicide if captured (he carried a poison for that purpose), or just tell them what they want to know because they will get it out of you anyway.
All this doesn't imply that Foley deserves “reverence”. But it does make things a bit easier to understand.
Up until they started to saw his head off, he looked defiant.

I just saw his father on tv saying, "The conflict in the Middle East is a stain on humanity."
What he means by that is that the existence of Israel is "a stain on humanity".
He means but is too gutless to say that if the Jews were simply driven into the sea, the world would be rid of a stain, and a much much happier place.
No one---NO ONE---who is a supporter of Israel would speak in such terms about the Middle East. We who do support Israel and despise its enemies (and their fellow travelers, like the Foleys) know exactly what the stain is.

Michael Savage played the audio of Foley reading a statement just prior to the beheading.
The article in this thread was posted this morning also. I wondered then whether Foley might have thought he was playing along with the IS, that they were staging this to only look a beheading and that he would be okay afterward. He seemed to be too calm for someone who knew he was about to be slaughtered. Either that or he was comfortable with being a sacraficial goat for IS.
The video of the actual slaughter is on the net, but I do not want to watch it. I still recall too vividly the video of Daniel Pearl.

It’s fake. Soon as the southern British speaking (presumed) mudslime starts hacking away, there is no arterial blood spitting out like there should be (if anyone has the stomach to watch a true beheading on liveleak; blood sprays almost instantly). This is propaganda.
Even make them not spurt blood when they have had their throat hacked into 5-7 times? Nothing, NOTHING comes out when the hacking commences. Watch any other isis hackathon on liveleak, blood immediately spews.
