YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK (CBS SF) — A Bay Area man died while rock climbing in Yosemite National Park shortly after his girlfriend accepted his marriage proposal.

36-year old Brad Parker, a veteran rock climber and Sebastopol resident was killed after falling from a climb along Matthes Crest according to the Press Democrat.

Parker had completed a climb to the summit of Cathedral Peak where he proposed to his girlfriend Jainee Dial. She accepted his proposal, but the couple separated as Parker went to climb along Matthes Crest by himself.

Yosemite Park Ranger Kari Cobb told the Press Democrat that Parker was climbing alone and without ropes on the granite crest when other climbers saw him fall around 5:45 p.m.

Climbing alone, without ropes, and after proposing marriage? Not a good combo IMO.

Many comments are brutal...comedic, but brutal.

I've been to Yosemite. It can be a dangerous place to visit. We visited a couple of years ago when the waterfalls were gushing, thanks to record snowfall the previous winter. Several people died that summer, when they'd leave the trail to try and get a better picture. They underestimated the force of the current, and the slippery rocks, with tragic results.

My son proposed to his girlfriend (now wife) after they climbed El Capitan. He is a serious climber and engineer using proper ropes and equipment. He has since climbed it solo, and is teaching his kids to boulder.

Solo-by oneself- is different from free soloing-by oneself and w/o protection.

When free soloing became the rage, I quit.

What was his ethnicity?

One of the news services thought it was so funny when some Polish tourists fell off a cliff taking a selfie.

I’m not an avid hiker or outdoorsman.

But, just wondering, don’t they have marked trails which hikers are supposed to stay on, so they stay out of trouble like this?

Or are there many who intentionally go into dangerous areas????

While he was doing it he was passed by a pair of speed free climbers who did it in several hours. He took several days.

These were rock climbers not hikers. Climb up rock faces, not hiking trails.

At least he died before leaving behind fatherless children. I pity his poor fiancé. I never understood the attraction of rock climbing...at all.

Apparently, the idiot was rock climbing without a rope and not hiking.

Hand sanitizers are everywhere these days. But just because you come upon one doesn’t mean you have to use it.

Good for him!

Last summer, I went on a vacation that changed my outlook on life. One of the activities my then 11YO son and I enjoyed was a day of canyoneering in Water Canyon, UT (near Zion NP).

During our two weeks together (without women...lol), we went horseback riding in Monument Valley and near Bryce Canyon NP, trout fishing in Sedona, a ghost tour in Tombstone, and visited the Alien Museum in Roswell.

How did it change my life? I dropped all notions of working until he graduates from college! lol

I figure I'll be doing a variety of things to bring additional money as needed, but I'll finally have the flexibility to say "no" to the rat race.

There are too many people, now dead, that would leave the trail to get a better picture. Even in streams that are no more than knee-deep, the strong current plus the slipperiness of the rocks are killers.

I guess it would be insensitive to say he really fell for her.
