Many people who downloaded last weeks Windows 8.1 patch have experienced blue screens of death, and looping system restarts. In fact, the problem has been so significant, that Microsoft has pulled the patches from Windows Update. They also recommend that you uninstall them.
In all, the problems have been associated with four patches, which aimed to address a number of issues. Aside from the symptoms associated with system instability, these could cause problems with any of your computers fonts in the event that any of them arent installed in the typical fonts directory in Windows.

sure, just pay them $300 for it.
once open office came out they lost a lot of customers.
other better mail products out there so don’t need outlook.
other better or equal browsers so’don’t need ie.
always secured my xp and am very careful where i go, so don’t need any of their new, always checking registration of everything OS’s.
so they’ve pretty much been made optional in most areas.
so your employer finally broke down in 1997 and went with the lie windows 95 was stable.
well they probably held out longer than most.

Microsoft is crumbling. They’ve apparently lost or destroyed their core competency. This is the umpteenth time they’ve had to pull a major patch that blue-screened Microsoft systems during the last 12 months.
Reading the article, I found this companion link:
Turns out my main application is now subject to this brand new bug on ALL MS IE browsers and there’s a specific hotfix for each DIFFERENT IE version on each DIFFERENT Microsoft OS, with separate versions for each of those in x86 and x64:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2991509
Oh, and you can apply the hoxfix only if one or more specific problematic updates have already been applied to the OS.
I have no idea how I could go about programmatically figuring all of that out and applying the right hoxfix on the many PCs my application runs on.
Microsoft is truly doomed when it reaches this point of complexity in trying to back-fix update problems of its own creation.
Time for a Windows 8.2 OS? The one thing that MS has is a very bad record with its “new and improved” operating systems. The hits were Windows XP Pro, Windows 7 Pro; losers MS Vista, MS 8.0 and now 8.1. Before even considering a switch, wait until service pack 2 comes out.
As another poster pointed you to, install Classic Shel l. Freeware with no strings
After, r. click on the start button and choose settings to customize.
If you ever get stuck in the "Metro" screen, just hold down the Windows key and tap the d key and let go, or click on Desktop.
Also, here are some shortcuts to save navigating. Just paste in the Run command (Windows key and r) C:\Windows\System32\appwiz.cpl (uninstall) C:\Windows\System32\rstrui.exe (system restore)
powercfg.cpl (Power plans)
devmgmt.msc (Device manager)
diskmgmt.msc (Disk manager)
eventvwr.msc (event viewer)
services.msc (Services)
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\wuapp.exe (Windows update)
I use AutoHotKey which you can make simple scripts to hot key functions using such info as the above (hot key ::Run C:\Windows\System32\appwiz.cpl)
Apple Akbar!!
I have one and could use some advice please. The article was confusing on how to uninstall. So I went to my PC settings, found the update in the update history, but there is no way to uninstall from there.
Right click..... Uninstall....
If it aint broke, leave it the hell alone :)
could not do it from PC settings but I just found the right window and uninstalled it. thanks
Just found the right window, all set, thanks
I have Windows 8, at least once a day, I get a pop up, telling me that I can update to Windows 8.1.
My options are, “yes” and “remind me later”, they need a third option, “leave me the #@&^ alone”.
Make Windows 8 more like 7. It is not perfect but it will help. Best thing to do is buy a copy of Windows 7 for your sister...
Get the free Classic Shell http://www.classicshell.net
Or better yet is Start8 and Modernmix from http://www.stardock.com/products
ModernMix brings back Windows, individual folders and programs. Buy both for $5.00 each <- worth it.
Once on the Desktop, right click and create a new folder and call it Computer. Open it and resize it so you see your desktop.
You will need to create a shortcut to IE by going to c:\program files\internet explorer then locate iexplore.exe and create a shortcut to the desktop.
Download and install Firefox and after the install open and go to http://www.firefox.com and click on Add-Ons and search for Classic Theme Restorer
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/?src=ss
You want this so your Firefox does not look like Google Chrome. many people hate the new look of Firefox so someone create an easy way to change the look back.
Ouch. That’s an unfortunate side effect of supporting such a wide range of hardware, though - it’s impossible to test every possibly configuration to be certain that everything works correctly in all cases.
I've had a few freezes that forced me to reboot, though. Seemed to only affect me when I had fast user switching enabled (and in use), so that's now disabled on the iMac (and was never on my MacBook Pro... because it's MINE and no one else is allowed to use it, let alone while I'm still logged in).
“Not my fault! You can’t prosecute me!”
Product liability lawsuits should apply to billion dollar computer companies. Their errors DO cost consumers billions in lost time and data.
MS makes good bank on the license fees for IT workers around the world “Microsoft certified TM”
What was it on that other thread?
Windows does all the grunt work so users won’t have to? What do users do when an update has ruined their PC?
I wouldn’t know, since I use Linux now. :p
