Volunteer to serve a Thanksgiving meal at a local shelter. You will have more reward than going off by yourself. I have volunteered to serve meals at a local facility and the experience is unbelievable.

Why not help serve the needy? Most cities have those kinds of opportunities.

Well if you’d like to spend it with a recently single older freeper man you’d be welcome to visit central TN and have some wild turkey smoked on the grill. I’ve got a guest room and indoor plumbing. : )

Although the Virgin Islands or Key West sound nicer. I’m at odds for the holidays myself.

I read the first 50 responses but time is short. Here are my suggestions.

1. Live near a VA Hospital? See if you can volunteer to prepare and/or serve disabled veterans;

2. Ask your pastor to help you to develop a list of mobile members of your church who are also alone. Eat, enjoy and thank God together for all the blessings He bestows. Make your gusts your honorary family. I bet some women without family nearby would want to contribute their talents and experience to preparing the meal. You will also wind up with new close friends. You will spend a lot less than $2000 and you can make a contribution to a good cause with some of the savings.

3. Invite worthy college students who cannot afford to go home for Thanksgiving. Ask campus ministries to arrange for such guests. Invite the priest or minister for that matter and get some professional help thanking God.

Best of luck. May God bless you and yours!

Book early and ski Utah. Spend all of your money, and be sure to decide not to live there.

What about a scenic train trip? Not sure what is available but riding the zephyr, having a Thanksgiving feast in an elegant dining car as the countryside (Rockies maybe) beckons out the window to the sound of clickety-clack, maybe some tunes on your iPod sounds lovely to me...if such exists.

Crystal River, Florida. Come swim with the Manatees.
That time of year, if its cool the Manatees swarm the river.
Many things to see and do. Natives are friendly!

A cruise might be a good getaway. Thanksgiving week might have some good deals.

"You must be about a half hour from me"

That could be a statement of joy, or a statement of 'hah, no way, I'm sick of this place.'

You're still welcome to join.

If you want to go for adventure or 'new' beauty though, I don't recommend planning it, or going to a place many people recommend. Throw a dart at a map, seek a place where you have no idea what's going to happen that day, don't know too much about it before you get there, ensure that each day will be full of surprises rather than a tour. Be among content locals, not among discontent tourers.

We found one close to the Methodist Church. That unit wasn’t available.

Thanks tinyowl.

I think I want to get out of Dodge if I can manage. Nice to know that there are local freepers in the offing though. Lonely up here in leftie-land sometimes.

Well, in a way, law and order in St Johns and law and order in Ferguson share the same UNDERLYING structural problems that a liberal society like ours and The Virgins is simply incapable of fixing.

You say you have no family but your kids are scattered?

I guess you mean family of the generation preceding you. Me neither. It’s a tad odd being the oldest generation at family gatherings. I’m in my mid 50s.

I think I’d take some of that 2K and invite myself to one of my kids’ Thanksgiving celebration. For me that’s not necessary as the kids all live within an hour of me.

Oh, and they like to eat what I cook.

You would be welcome here in Reno. Several outstanding T’day feasts. Tahoe, the outback, hunting and skiing all within a few miles.
