Chief: Darren Wilson Did Not Know Michael Brown Was Suspect In 'Strong-Armed' Robbery

Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson said Friday the initial contact between 18-year-old Michael Brown and police officer Darren Wilson was not related to a convenience store robbery.

Brown, an unarmed black teenager, was shot and killed by Wilson on Saturday, August 9.

In a press conference earlier on Friday, Ferguson police released a report naming Brown as the main suspect in a convenience store robbery where a box of Swisher Sweets cigars valued at $48.99 was stolen and a clerk was allegedly shoved.

Video of the incident allegedly showing Brown, which was released to the public, "had nothing to do with the stop" and was "unrelated" to Wilson's contact with Brown, Jackson said. He said video of the convenience store incident was released in response to Freedom of Information Act requests.

"The initial contact between Darren Wilson and Mike Brown was not related to the alleged theft of cigars," Jackson said, indicating Wilson did not know Brown was a suspect in the robbery.

Everyone update your flowcharts as I ask the question ... Did the $48.99 include tax, because someone told me once that robbery is only a felony if it is more than $50.00?

Assault battery is a different matter. Clearly there was an assault and Battery.

I wonder what Brown's state of mind was that day? OH WAIT, IT'S ON VIDEO! HE COMMITTED A ROBBERY AND BELIEVED OFFICER WILSON WAS GOING TO TAKE HIM TO JAIL.

Allegedly, Brown punched Officer Wilson in the face. I suppose Obama thinks blacks are entitled to do that too, given all the slavery Wilson is guilty of. /s

I thought the officer was responding to the 911 call of the armed robbery in the convenience store. I would have suspected that the description of the robbers would have gone out over the broadcast.

If I were Darren Wilson, I'd seriously consider moving my bank account to a foreign account and leaving the country permanently, before being charged with a crime, to some place that does not have an extradition treaty with the U.S., so that when I was charged I could not be extradited back. 'Cause there's no way he's gonna get a fair trial, and even if he did, the lawyer's fees will ruin his future.

But that doesn’t mean Michael Brown & Dorian Johnson knew that the officer didn’t know or wasn’t stopping them because of the robbery. They’d just committed a strong arm robbery & a police officer pulls up....
Of course they assumed the officer was there because of the crime they just committed. Hence Michael Brown’s aggression & resistance.

Rxactly. This explains Brown’s disproportionate response, which must have taken Wilson by surprise.

So what? Brown thought he did.

Exactly! One of the possile narratives by an ex-fed prosecutor on Fox, so nicely put by by FReeper BluePlum

the officer didn’t know

that Brown had just committed a robbery.....

But Brown knew

and Brown assumed the officer knew.....

and so the dance began. And a side note:

In this day and age of cell and smart phone videos, don't you think it strange nobody at the shooting scene documented the event and cmme forward with proof?

My understanding is the only witness to the shooting was Brown’s accomplice in the robbery. Are there others claiming to have seen the shooting?

But that doesn’t mean Michael Brown & Dorian Johnson knew that the officer didn’t know

More importantly, the behavior Michael Brown exhibits at the convenience store fits with the behavior the cops describe at the shooting scene - he was physically aggressive, grabbing the store clerk by the shirt and shoving him backwards.

Strong-arm Robbery is also Robbery 2 degree; a class B felony. There is no dollar amount involved.

skeeter:"Are there others claiming to have seen the shooting?"

When this incident first broke , I recall seeing a statement on Freep that said that a women was driving down the street,
and she said the situation "just didn't look right ". A shot was fired through a window , and I assume she ducked down in her car .
The report continues that she attempted to use her camera phone, but it just didn't work right, so there is no video record.
I haven't researched it further .
