Robin Williams’ close friend reveals actor resented having to do new Mrs Doubtfire
The Telegraph ^ | 08/13/2014 | Josie Ensor

Robin Williams resented having to work on films such as the second Mrs Doubtfire but felt compelled in order to keep money coming in, a close friend of the actor has told the Telegraph.

Williams, who had been working on four projects when he was believed to have taken his own life this week, was said to have been dreading making more films as they "brought out his demons".

He had committed to starring in sequels to the hugely successful Mrs Doubtfire and Night in the Museum, as well as comedy Merry Friggin’ Christmas, and the drama Boulevard.

But according to his neighbour and friend of over a decade, he no longer wanted to work on films as he felt they were not conducive to his mental well-being.

"Robin had promised himself he would not do any more as he invested so much in his roles that it left him drained and particularly vulnerable to depressive episodes,” the friend told the paper.

"He signed up to do them purely out of necessity. He wasn’t poor, but the money wasn’t rolling in any more and life is expensive when you have to pay off two ex-wives and have a family to support.”

His friend, who declined to be named, said he last saw the actor three weeks ago when the two of them went on one of their regular bike rides around their hometown of Tiburon just north of San Francisco.

the wise thing to do is live well below your means (but still comfortably) and put what's left over into safe, stable investments.

Absolutely agree. However IF he was bipolar, a symptom of it is poor money management especially during high manic episodes. Here's a pretty good article on it.

Once the high manic episode cycles into a low manic episode, they look at the money they just p*ssed away which feeds into their depression. Nasty cycle.

I once came across the Iron Sheik (WWF wrestling) at a shopping mall. I asked him for his autograph for my wrestling fan brother.

After writing it, he asked me humbly if I could spare $5 so he could buy lunch!

The lesson here is, it can be depressing to have money problems,

"I don't care about losing all the money....it's losing all the stuff."

RE: I once came across the Iron Sheik (WWF wrestling)

Is this the same guy who defeated Bob Backlund for the WWF championship with his famed Camel Clutch?

Apparently William’s had issues with most of the roles he took on...but then considering his personal issues I'd expect they too played into the equations of how he saw himself in these roles. Changing wives as he did roles he played likely didn't help his view of life either. Seems he had a difficult time accepting or finding contentment with his lot in life no matter which direction it went or that he took it.

He should have had better advisors

Yes! That alone could have helped him immensely imho.

Yup. That’s him. His brain is mostly gone now from heavy drug use.

Eerie. Along the lines of the ‘World’s Greatest Dad’?

He could’ve done a 3-6 month stint in Vegas. How tough would that have been?

WHy does Hollyweird have to make a sequel out of almost every dang movie and sometimes TV shows? WHats next-— Tootsie II ? C’mon you laggards.

Um... because (in a majority of instances) it works?

Ka-ching!

Regards,

...”Welcome to the world of the rest of us”....

Well yea! Seems like Hollywood and the PR want to somehow make Williams a victim of life rather than recognize the responsibilities he let slip through his hand.

We all do so at times for various reasons but he seemed to feed chaos to some extent...and then crash when it wasn’t there.

His offspring were well beyond child support age, so I don’t see what that has to do with it.

Depression or bipolar disease (which might be the more correct diagnosis in his instance) are real diseases. The diseased organ is the brain. As with other diseased organs, all the money in the world (or lack, thereof) may make little difference in their resolution (or lack, thereof). Too often after hearing about suicide the media and lay people look for “explanations.” More often than not there are none. He was sick. He succumbed to his illness.

Poor guy?

I volunteered at an assistance ministry. We had a homeless, one-legged VN veteran who often came by for help.

He walked on crutches and carried a backpack with an American flag stuck on it. He often told me: “It won’t be long, it won’t be long now.”

One night he intentionally crossed Highway 6 and walked into the path of an 18-wheeler.

I will remember him much longer than I will remember Robin Williams.

Was that in his heyday in the 80s or just a year ago?
