Robin Williams’ close friend reveals actor resented having to do new Mrs Doubtfire

Robin Williams resented having to work on films such as the second Mrs Doubtfire but felt compelled in order to keep money coming in, a close friend of the actor has told the Telegraph.

Williams, who had been working on four projects when he was believed to have taken his own life this week, was said to have been dreading making more films as they "brought out his demons".

He had committed to starring in sequels to the hugely successful Mrs Doubtfire and Night in the Museum, as well as comedy Merry Friggin’ Christmas, and the drama Boulevard.

But according to his neighbour and friend of over a decade, he no longer wanted to work on films as he felt they were not conducive to his mental well-being.

"Robin had promised himself he would not do any more as he invested so much in his roles that it left him drained and particularly vulnerable to depressive episodes,” the friend told the paper.

"He signed up to do them purely out of necessity. He wasn’t poor, but the money wasn’t rolling in any more and life is expensive when you have to pay off two ex-wives and have a family to support.”

His friend, who declined to be named, said he last saw the actor three weeks ago when the two of them went on one of their regular bike rides around their hometown of Tiburon just north of San Francisco.

There should be a maximum alimony amount and maximum child support amounts. To base it on someone’s current income with the assumption that it will always be that high is a cruel form of slavery.

Poor guy. He had to work at things he didn't like because he needed the money. Nobody does that.

It just doesn’t make any sense at all. He needed money, making films is money in the bank. You have to work to pay the bills, even if it’s something you don’t really care for. What were his ‘demons’? We’ll never know.................

Being humiliated by having to commute 20 miles from the nicest place to live in the country to work on TV show and being forced to subsist on $800,000 a month is really a grim fate .

On the other hand, I was facing having to play Ms Doubtfire , I'd probably slit my wrists.

I agree with you in theory however what is “maximum”.

I really don’t feel any pity for someone that once lived in a $4 million dollar home that has to downsize to a $300,000 home. Or has to go from driving a new Mercedes to a new Honda.

I see absolutely no legal or moral justification for 5 figure monthly child support payments. Even the most expensive prep schools in the country are going to be $60k and that takes care of 9 months of the year.

Too often ex-wives maintain their lifestyle on child support payments and the kids see nothing of it.

I don’t think we want this tracking off into bad divorce/child support stories because the thread would never end.

So it’s a twofer.

Don’t like to pay alimony? Then don’t run off with the nanny.

As Dave Ramsey would say, his problem wasn't "income", it was "outgo".

The lesson here is, it can be depressing to have money problems, but money and a luxurious lifestyle won't cure depression.

An acquaintance at church was paying $9000/mo for child support for ONE kid. The ex took him to court to try to get more and the judge threw her out of court, chastising her for being so greedy.

Yeah, but how many of us have a vocation which brings out “demons” in us?

I guess he was right.
