Word For The Day, Wednesday, August 13, 2014-- peshmerga
;
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
peshmerga [peSHˈmərgə] (the g is hard, as in give)
hear it pronounced
noun
A member of a Kurdish nationalist guerrilla organization.
Origin: from Kurdish pêshmerge, from pêsh 'before' + merg 'death'. From Wikipedia:
Peshmerga or Peshmerge (Kurdish pronunciation [pɛʃmærˈɡæ]; Kurdish: پێشمەرگە Pêşmerge}, literally "those who confront death") is the term used by Kurds to refer to armed Kurdish fighters. The Peshmerga forces of Kurdistan have been in existence since the advent of the Kurdish independence movement in the early 1920s, following the collapse of the Ottoman and Qajar empires which had jointly ruled over the area. Peshmerga forces include women in their ranks. Many Kurds will say that all Kurds willing to fight for their rights are Peshmerga. The term remains in contemporary usage, sometimes written as pesh merga in Anglophone media.[5] The Peshmerga has proven to be an effective army, providing security to all ethnicities. During the US led invasion of Iraq the Peshmerga helped the United States in their mission to capture Saddam Hussain.They also captured al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden's messenger in 2004, which led to the slaying of Bin Laden. The term Peshmerga is also the official name of the armed forces of the Kurdistan Regional Government in the autonomous Kurdistan Region.

Local security forces, manned mostly by former members of the Kurdish militia, the peshmerga, are more capable than those in other parts of Iraq.

I dated a Lebanese girl in college whose father was a Peshmerga soldier in the late 70s. He was a fierce man.

I married a girl whose father was Lebanese. Also pretty fierce, although not a peshmerga.

The word does sound more than a little bit Yiddish, as in: "My son-in-law is such a peshmerga."

Pesh-merga (Kurdish word & pronunciation). Peesh-marga (Persian word & pronunciation). Both mean same thing, ‘near or face/confront death’. Btw, no need to add ‘s’ at the end. Merga or Marga is already plural both in Kurdish & Persian. Merg or Marg is the singular form.

Do some research into Obama’s birth records while you’re there.
If not, have a great time.
