A scientist at the University of Illinois, Dipanjan Pan, and his team say they might have found a way to stop cancer cell growth, according to a paper presented at the American Chemical Society conference this week.
The work is in very early stages, but has shown success in stopping breast cancer and melanoma cell growth in lab tests. Pans technique uses nanotechnology to deliver a synthesized element similar to the venom found in bees, snakes and scorpions.
Ancient texts show doctors have used venom to treat aliments for years. In 14 BC, the Greek writer Pliny the Elder described the use of bee venom as a cure for baldness. Doctors used beestings to treat the Emperor Charlemagnes gout in the 700s. Traditional Chinese medicine has used frog venom to fight liver, lung, colon and pancreatic cancers. Alternative doctors in Cuba have used scorpion venom to fight brain tumors.
The general problem with injecting someone with venom is that there can be harmful side effects. Beestings, for example, hurt and become inflamed because melittin, the main toxin in a bees venom, destroys cell membranes. It can also cause blood to clot, damage the heart muscle and hurt healthy nerve cells.

“doc says you gonna die”
I have a friend who is using blue scorpion venom (from Mexico) to treat her cancer.
Conventional treatments just aren’t working all that well for her.
Wait - I think I've seen this treatment pioneered in a movie....
Im a beekeeper and get stung about once a month. My joint pains, tennis elbow, and frozen shoulder completely go away after a couple of beestings. It aint that bad. Think cigarrette being put out on your skin without the residual, lasting pain.
Is there much difference in bee venom and wasp venom?
Do you ever worry about becoming allergic to bee stings? Do you carry an epipen with you just in case?
LOL! I remember that joke.
All I can say is that my FIL had an old cocker spaniel that had tumors that were cancerous (according to the vet) and cataracts that you could clearly see. The dog was bitten over the eye by a rattlesnake and nearly died. I remember seeing her laying on the floor in a pool of drool, covered in foam and panting. I though for sure she was going to die but my FIL said to let her be. I’ll be damned if she did not recover completely two days later. Within a couple of weeks her cataracts went away and the tumors on her side disappeared shortly after. She lived another 6 years before the coyotes got her one evening.
Shouda grabbed that snake. Would have made more bucks than even I can imagine, and that is a lot of bucks.
At this time in life, the punch line usually suffices.
umm.. why is everyone glazing over the fact that they used nanotechnology to deliver the venom?
the fact that tiny robots were used to kill cells in the human body should make you very, very nervous
the fact that people are still noodling with nano tech should make everyone nervous (grey goo anyone?)
If they really want to see the money they need for research, say you can get high from it.
I haven’t seen anybody who got out of here alive yet.
lol
say it’ll stop global warming

No kidding. I was pretty astounded. Could have been all coincidence and that is what I told myself, but still...
No, but the head of the Arkansas Beekeepers, gradually, became very allergic to bee stings, after 40 years of keeping bees. He got stung in 2013 before one of our meetings and his arm was 3 times the size of the other one AFTER taking alot of benydryl.
Docs told him that he is now in the severe category.
As to your other question, yes. I keep Epipens for, not me, but say, the yard worker, neighbors kids, etc.
I was stung a few times while I was growing up but it was never a problem,. Not until I was about 28. I was stung about 6 or 8 times when I got into a nest of yellow jackets. I swelled up pretty big and since I was under the care of an allergist at the time, he started giving me weekly shots . I have only been stung once since the allergy shots ended and I had no reaction at all.
