FULL INSIDE STORY! Gripped by dementia, the beloved TV star is wasting away and is said to be on her deathbed.
Sadly, Marys battle with diabetes, kidney and heart disease as well as Alzheimers and dementia-related symptoms is nearing an end, sources say.
With her eyesight and hearing nearly gone, the 77 year olds remaining strength is fading, following a series of devastating emotional and physical blows, according to insiders.
But now family and friends are joining Marys devoted third husband, Dr. Robert Levine, at her bedside in the couples Connecticut mansion, multiple sources tell The ENQUIRER.
Mary often cant speak due to her deteriorating state, but at times shes lucid and cries out from memories of her past, said a source, sharing an intimate glimpse of her sad last days.
The once-bubbly brunette remains haunted by thoughts of her son, Richie Meeker, who tragically died at age 24 in 1980 from a self-inflicted accidental gunshot wound, said the source.
The death of her dear Richie, which was also the name of her TV son on The Dick Van Dyke Show, devastated Mary, said the source.
Its left a lasting impact on her for more than 30 years. Now Mary longs to be at peace, and she knows that in death shell be reunited with her only child. Shes been heard to cry out, Ill be with my Richie soon.
Another source told The ENQUIRER: Mary has been fading, but with all the will she has left, shes refused to leave her home. She wants to pass peacefully in her bed surrounded by her husband, her pets and closest friends.
Its heartbreaking to see her like this wasting away as she is but its the end for Mary. Shes almost completely blind and deaf.
As The ENQUIRER reported in its June 9 issue, sources said Mary was exhibiting symptoms similar to dementia and Alzheimers disease, and friends feared she could be dead in three months.
The ENQUIRER also reported friends had urged Levine, her cardiologist husband of nearly 31 years, to place Mary in a nursing home after a series of incidents and accidents sent police and medics to their $12 million gated Greenwich estate.
But Mary refused to enter an assisted-living facility, even though it could offer round-the-clock care and possibly extend her life, said the source. It wasnt what Mary wanted, and her distraught husband wanted to make her as comfortable at home as possible.
The second source added: Mary is at peace in her house, but she suffers from a laundry list of physical ailments that are close to taking her.
She has heart and kidney problems, and at times, she cant see and she cant hear.
Shes almost completely debilitated, and there are fears that shell lapse into a vegetable-like state.
Only a miracle would bring Mary off her deathbed and while Robert and her friends hope for recovery, it sadly looks like that wont happen.
Besides her physical ailments, Mary was crushed emotionally when she learned that longtime Hollywood pal James Garner, 86, had passed away on July 19.
Mary and James, the handsome hero of TVs Maverick and The Rockford Files, co-starred in the 1984 made-for-TV movie Heartsounds.
Jim was a dear friend and they grew close when they worked together, said the source.
Mary often reminisced about working with Jim, and always said that he was one of Hollywoods good guys.
They tried to keep the news that hed passed from her, but Mary found out. She broke down afterward. Im afraid Jims death reminded her that her own time was coming to an end.
Mary was distraught that, for the second consecutive year, she was unable to attend the annual fund-raiser for Broadway Barks, the animal charity she founded with actress Bernadette Peters, said the second source.
The July 12 gala in New Yorks Shubert Alley featured celebrities from Broadways hottest shows promoting adoption of shelter pets and raising money to benefit multiple New York City animal shelters and adoption agencies.
Mary is a great animal lover, and its the one event she looks forward to every year, said that source. Missing it was a bitter pill for her to swallow.
During her glittery career, Mary won two Emmys for The Dick Van Dyke Show in the 60s and three for The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the 70s. She starred with Elvis Presley in the 1969 film Change of Habit and was nominated for an Oscar for the 1980 drama Ordinary People.
The legendary actress was last photographed in public April 6, 2013, at Los Angeles International Airport while heading home after shooting an episode of the TV Land sitcom Hot in Cleveland. She appeared pale, gaunt and hollow-cheeked.
The episode reunited her with former The Mary Tyler Moore Show co-stars Valerie Harper, Cloris Leachman, Betty White and Georgia Engel. It aired Sept. 4, 2013, and marked Marys last showbiz appearance.
The Hollywood icon filmed the episode despite a years-long struggle with multiple health woes. She has battled Type 1 diabetes for four decades and suffered serious complications.
As The ENQUIRER has reported, Mary also suffered two nasty falls at her home. In one 2013 tumble, she broke her hip and fractured a shoulder. She was hospitalized and then developed pneumonia. In a previous fall, the once-perky star crashed down four stairs, shattering her collarbone and several ribs.
She also required risky surgery in May 2011 to remove a benign brain tumor.
The first source said: Everyone is praying for the best.
Channel 9 in LA used to have a movie ever night. The Million Dollar movie. late 50s early 60s. They played the same movie every night, I think 7-9, Mon-Fri. I must have watched the Al Jolson story 15-20 times. Used to do a great impression.
“A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants”.
The Enquirer broke the John Edwards story.
.
Actually, I think she and Jessica Biel resemble each other.
She deserves better than that.
I have hesitated to post on this thread, on a glorious summer evening in Great Lakes country. Well here goes. My wife is just a year younger than Mary Tyler Moore, I am older. First I must thank the posters for the excellent still shots of Mary. Our first impressions of North America were exactly these images on the old black and white T/V.
One day the very (fill in the blank) persons behind National Enquirer will face their quietus. Sure, the First Amendment to the Constitution is one of the finest things created on God's green earth. Just temper it with empathy and decency and it works beautifully.
This the National Enquirer does not do. Indeed it is just the opposite and one recalls the outing of Tiger Woods. His private indiscretions with another woman. I will now echo the biggest liberal coup during the McCarthy Hearings.
Have you no shame Senator? Have you no shame?
One could ask this of the National Enquirer. One day, each and every one of them will get theirs. Excuse this ramble everyone.
I would watch both of her shows when I was a kid. Dick Van Dyke was in reruns then. i remember some of the episodes like when there was the inflatable raft that she opened up? The dream about Danny Thomas being from outer space and the walnuts in the closet? The trip they took to the haunted lodge scared the heck out of me when I was little. Then her show in the 70s... Vividly remembering watching it with my family. An show for adults show the kids could watch. Now I watch things with my mom or my brother’s kids, and I am embarrassed. Not then, except for maybe All in the Family and Maude...
Beautifully said!
I think you hit the nail on the head, Peter Libra. That, plus the utter corruption, is what’s gone haywire with our whole society. We’ve lost our self respect; our discretion & our couth. (”we” speaking figuratively) This is what happens when people “let it all hang out”.
I don’t care about her politics. God Bless her! She will always be one of my favorites.
From her book, “Growing Up Again,”
Moore also has been public about her alcoholism. She says she hasnt had a drink since 1984. Her mother was an alcoholic and her father an emotionally distant man whose approval she never felt she achieved. She has been divorced twice. The original cougar, she has been married to her third husband, Dr. Robert Levine, for 25 years. He is 18 years her junior. In 1980, her only childRichard Meeker Jr., from her first marriagedied at 24 from an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound.
I stand corrected about her drinking then.
Pretty and fit describes her to a “T”. :)
She stated that her mother had been an alcoholic too. That doesn’t detract from her beauty and talent. I love to watch the old reruns of The Dick VanDyke Show and the Mary Tyler Moore shows. Apparently, she went to the Betty Ford Clinic and took her last drink in 1984 - so kudos to her for overcoming her addiction. She also said in her memoirs that she smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day. Whew!

That’s why she’s dying so young.
