Police: Toddler smashes Jeep into house, dashes home to watch cartoons

A diaper-clad toddler crashed a Jeep Wrangler into a neighbor’s house in Oregon — then scampered home, sat on the couch and watched cartoons, authorities said.

The 3-year-old boy was under his mother’s watch in Myrtle Creek when the incident happened last week, Police Officer Kevin Taggart said.

She was not paying attention to him and he found the keys, got inside the car and knocked it out of gear, according to Taggart.

A witness called 911 after seeing the child rolling by in the Jeep and past an intersection before hitting the house. Sensing he was in trouble, the toddler jumped out of the car and dashed home.

“An officer went to the boy’s home — and the boy was sitting on the couch watching cartoons like nothing ever happened,” Taggart said.

"Young man, you're in serious trouble. No cartoons for a whole week!"

Oh, Lord, they find trouble fast at that age. I and an elderly Japanese lady once fended off a completely naked three-year-old from a busy road, who had shucked her diaper and headed toward the beach in less time that it takes to read this. Her Mom had taken her eyes off the kid for no more than seconds. And man, could she run.

My cousin did this same thing when she was about 4. Wrecked her parents’ carport. She grew up to be a VIP in her career and her community. Sadly, she died way too young. Always precocious.

Yep, mom probably went to the can. You can’t tie ‘em up and they learn a heckofa lot just by watching...and they’re fast!

Yeah? I guess he also figured out to disengage the parking brake, too, eh mom?

Oh? You don't set your parking brake even though you park on an incline? What an idjit. Take that baby away from her before it gets hurt.

LOL. I did that to my dad’s Pontiac Tempest when I was seven. Didn’t hit anything, but I left it sitting in a intersection. That little car had a dash mounted shift lever that was just too much to resist.

“Her Mom had taken her eyes off the kid for no more than seconds.”

They are really terrifying at that age.

We had our grandson at the county fair here this weekend. He’s not even 2. I don’t think he’s ever been in a big crowd like that before. You’d like to think the kid would have been a little intimidated, but no. He was ready to scamper off (had to borrow that phrase from the article because it is so perfect) at any given moment.

My uncle drove his shiny new red sports car (a Camaro I think) over to visit my parents back in 1967. My brother crawled in the front seat and knocked it into gear. Did I mention that my parent's house was on a hill and there was a pond at the bottom of the hill?

Brother tumbled out as the car began moving so no children were harmed from the car going in the water.

The car was a total loss.

I drove my Uncle’s Mercury Comet through our garage. I think I still hold the record for the lowest ET for a four year old going through a garage.
