A 400-pound asthmatic Staten Island dad died Thursday after a cop put him in a chokehold and other officers appeared to slam his head against the sidewalk, video of the incident shows.

“I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe!” Eric Garner, 43, repeatedly screamed after at least five NYPD officers took him down in front of a Tompkinsville beauty supply store when he balked at being handcuffed.

Within moments Garner, a married father of six children with two grandchildren, stopped struggling and appeared to be unconscious as police called paramedics to the scene. An angry crowd gathered, some recording with smartphones.

Smoking a cigarette outside and drinking a beer in a paper bag is also dealt with harshly. I was in Time Square a few months ago waiting on line OUTSIDE to see a show and a cop came up and gave me a ticket for doing both of those things, and it was not 20 feet from where the Muslim tried to detonate a car bomb a few years ago. Remember that? He just left his car in the middle of Times square and the cops did nothing while smoke poured from it. But smoking a cigarette and drinking a 12oz can of Bud in a paper bag?? WHOA! Highly illegal! No doubt chewing gum will be illegal next.

In before the badge worshippers.

What is the point of your post? You really think any Freepers are going to defend the cops in this case?

There are some who go around and defend, even worship police misbehavior all while shrieking at us that we are somehow wrong to mistrust cops.
Alaskawolf was one such cretin.
So yes, there are creepers who do indeed defend this crap.
Heck, on the one thread about the cop beating the tar out of that lady, four people said it was right and proper.

It’s a shame the guy died, but it’s his own damn fault. He was breaking the law. Cops tried to arrest him. He resisted. Anytime you resist arrest, you’re asking for trouble.

They had no probable cause to arrest or harass the man, so he should not have been forced to resist. Just because I guy has a badge that does not give him the right to put his hands on anyone.

How do you know they had no probable cause? The article said the guy was known to sell illegal cigarettes. Whether he had broken the law or not is up to others (judges, juries, etc.) to decide. But if a cop says “You are under arrest,” you have no right to resist. To do so is worse than stupid, it is criminal. The time to contest the legitimacy of the arrest is NOT out in the street.

They can’t / won’t / too chicken / to go aftert he really bad guys. They have to excersize their POWER and CONTROL over jaywalkers, smoke peddlers and all kinds of assorted other meaningless and victimless offenders to stisfy their needs.

Bears repeating. Bullies always go after the low-hanging fruit.

Little did anybody know that the moratorium on, “stop and frisk,” would spawn the new practice of, “strangle and suffocate.”

Do cops really need to manhandle a 400 guy?

There weren't any 90 YO grandmothers to arrest...they've been snatched up by the TSA.

Oh my gosh. You've been here since 2006? Read any thread -- any -- involving the injury, sexual invasion, humiliation or death of a person under suspicion or arrest, and you will see it over and over.

They like to harass people. He didn't have any on him. It's stupid on their part. Now if it happened to me, I would not resist, I would let them take me in, lawyer up and sue them for false arrest. But then again I am not a 400 pound black man who is tired of being harassed by the cops.

The government created the problem in the first place. They don't give a crap about any body's health, they just want to make money off it. They didn't get their piece. Even if he had a cigarette stand on the side walk, you still can't kill the guy. No common sense was exercised here at all. How far is a 400 pound guy going to get? He had a pending court date. Why escalate it? Because some little tiny men wanted to feel big and bad by taking down the big man.

I knew a guy, who was huge like that. Big teddy bear, his crime? Took a leak on a dumpster behind a bar. Two hot shots decided that this was the crime of the century as well. The two morons would not even have seen it if they had not been in the Burger King drive through.

He did not resist, but they still had 4 units respond and a paddy wagon. He went with them. I called a lawyer and he was released immediately.

I dont know if he was breaking the law though, they said he broke up a fight then was standing around when they accused him of selling untaxed cigarettes and when he protested saying he didnt do anything, they went wrestlemania on his ass. NYC is a fascist state, its what happens when liberals run unapposed, I moved out 2 years ago for that reason so I don’t trust anything the cops do there.
