Farmville family stunned that officer fatally shot Golden Retriever

PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, Va. — A Farmville family is searching for answers after a Prince Edward Deputy shot their eight-year-old Golden Retriever, named Party, ultimately killing him.

“The dog was at the same level of the officer when he fired,” said homeowner Stephen Carwile, and indicated that the deputy was standing at the bottom of the deck.

The incident happened June 27 while the family wasn’t home. A deputy was serving Carwile a civil warrant when he said he felt threatened by the dog.

“I come home to blood all over the place all over my porch,” said Carwile. He called the sheriff’s office after he couldn’t find Party, then saw his blood stained deck and the warrant.

“The lieutenant called me and stated that my dog had tried to attack the officer and the officer had shot my dog.”

The Prince Edward Sheriff’s office put out the following press release:

On June 27, 2014 a Prince Edward County Deputy was charged by a vicious dog at a residence while he was attempting civil paper service. The Deputy tried to get away from the dog but the animal lunged at him so he fired his weapon as required by training. Animal Control was notified seeking medical assistance for the dog, but the animal later died.

The sheriff’s department said the incident was investigated by the Virginia State Police, however a state police spokeswoman said that was not the case.

“The resident did speak with Sgt. King, who explained that the Virginia State Police cannot investigate an incident involving another law enforcement agency without that agency’s formal request, or the request of the Attorney General, commonwealth’s attorney, or grand jury,” said state police. “You will need to contact the sheriff’s office for details concerning the incident.”

Party’s owner, Carwile’s 14-year-old stepson Prescott Stewart, said that’s not the dog he knew, and he can’t imagine the dog lunging at anyone.

“It’s like a void that has been put inside of me I can’t describe it; he was just that kind of dog that if he could be human, he could be my brother — it’s just hard,” Stewart said.

A necropsy shows Party was shot twice, and died of blood loss.

“Anything after the first shot the dog was disabled, the second shot he was just shooting to be cruel,” said Carwile.

The Carwiles said Party suffered on their deck for more than an hour before before he died in the care of the dog warden.

“I know he suffered, he was trying to get in the house,” he said. “He wanted one of us to open that door and let him him so he could be saved.”

“I still have bullet holes in my house, blood on my porch and bullet casings laying in my yard that I have to look at everyday and it just keeps going through my mind without anybody doing anything about this,” he added.

The Carwiles plan to file a civil suit. They want this case investigated and the deputy who killed their dog terminated.

“I want to see him loose his job and never tow a firearm again,” said Carwile.

“I just hope he thinks about it and realizes he did wrong,” said Stewart.

I deal with field type Goldens, who are a good deal "sharper" than typical Goldens.

But while I have run across a few dog-aggressive field types, I've never seen one human-aggressive. Ever. Sure they'll bark to announce a stranger, and they'll raise a ruckus if they're crated and you approach "their" truck.

But the dog in the telecast is not a purebred Golden - it's a mix. From the prick ears and narrow head I wd say Border Collie - Golden. But it's highly unlikely that a family pet wd be human aggressive to strangers - unless they never have guests and the kids never have anybody over.

"Have whatever type of day you deserve. I learned long ago not to argue with idiots, because they drag one down to their level, then beat one with experience."

May you need an officer today and experience the bizarre, unthinking, craziness your cult deserves as the perp overwhelms you.

"My comments to you were based on you’re own responses/comments. Yours were wild reckless speculation regarding who I might be, personal background etc."

Perhaps you care to re-read your responses. Rant on about cops along with your under educated buddies...the adults will watch out for you in spite of you.

Based on your responses, I’ve forgotten more about law enforcement operations, tactics and motives than you ever knew.

I live in the country and have a 130lb 6 yr old purebred golden. The worst he has done is step on my foot standing close to be petted. I hope to never have a deputy come to the property. The retriever is free on a quarter acre fenced in area where the house sits and you have to open a gate to get into it. I know my boy would get shot, anyone that comes into ‘his’ area will be approached with one of his favorite toys or stuffed animals in his mouth, tail wagging furiously and an ominous sounding low growl daring them to take the toy and play tugawar. He has 2 yorkies he grew up with at 7 and 10lbs each and 2 grandsons that grew up around him. Worst he ever did was knock them over as toddlers with his wagging tail.
The play growl of his I am sure would be his death warrant.
He is epileptic and swacked out on phenobarbitol to control his seizures, but I know he’d get shot only because of his size.

Okay, officer Friday, you stand around and pound your chest. The adults will go out and take care of the community.

Wrong again Dutchboy.

The moniker is based on the definition of the word, not some TV show you might watch.

In addition, your “adults in charge” as you described them, have all but left this country dead on the floor.

Check roger, officer friendly. Practice your quick draw in front of the mirror, polish that badge you found in Cherrios, and leave the policing to those who understand real life.

Nothing left but personal attacks...zip

Seems to be a clear pattern with you.

You defending actions of yet another clear escalating pattern of LE tactics, which have left yet another pet shot to death on it’s own property, speaks for itself.

It’s your thread now dutchboy.

Cheers!

Okay, thank you. But throughout you neglected to note that the officer was serving papers on the property, not hunting for a pet to shoot. Lesson? Keep your stupid dog inside if they bite or expect humans to protect themselves at the expense of your dog. Simple. But apparently the geniuses around here think the dog should have shot the officer, eaten the neighbor's baby and gotten an award. This is the same unthinking logic that the left is using at the border...amazing.

Where the hell did you get that idea, 'they live in our community' ?!? The hell they do. They live in neighboring jurisdictions or somewhere outside of their regular beat, by-and-large, because they don't want to be confronted by those they might have arrested, or the families of those they may have committed grievous harm to. A parking ticket or a pot bust is one thing, but if they're predisposed to using excessive force and/or firearms, they don't want to be caught in a supermarket in jeans and a T-shirt when the owner of said dead dog or father of comatose son comes rolling down the aisle. Fists and canned goods are going to be flying hot and heavy. I saw it twice in my neighborhood in just a dozen years, and both times the cops pulled up stakes and moved again. You'd think the silly bastards would police themselves if for no other reasons than for their PR image, but the courts allow them to get away with it, the DOJ turns a blind eye, and now brownshirt LEOs are making it harder to determine who the Officer Friendly types are in our own neighborhoods. Grassroots community policing is DEAD. Gruppenführer Holder made sure of that when everyone to the right of Jerry Garcia was declared a potential domestic terrorist.

We have the solution to King George III's dilemma about quartering his army on the colonials:

Pay the troops $30-$40 an hour from taxpeasant money from the property tax "King's Rent", and give the NSA, Homeland Security, and local law enfarcement the ability to monitor the homes of the peasants from the outside.

Make sure the peasants have "Dancing With American Idol Stars" and Monday Night Fuuuuuutball.

Done deal.
