The U.S. House of Representatives has voted to permanently extend a ban on Internet access taxes that Congress has temporarily extended three times over the past 16 years.

The House, in a voice vote Tuesday, passed the Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act, over the objections of some Democrats. In addition to permanently banning states and local governments from taxing Internet access, the bill would ban any other form of Internet-only taxes, although its aimed primarily at taxes on Internet access service.

The bill does not address Internet sales taxes, a separate issue that Congress has debated for several years. The House has failed so far to act on a bill, passed by the Senate in May 2013, that would allow states to collect sales tax on products sold over the Internet.

Well, it's a start. I still think internet sales taxes are illegal, but there are an awful lot of liberal states out there that won't rest until they find a way to get ever more taxes out of everyone, whether or not the company doing the selling to them is residing in their particular state and subject to their jurisdiction.

It took a hundred years to dump the phone tax implemented to pay for the Spanish-American War... long after everyone had forgotten the Maine.

Well, and now we have something called the FUSF, which contrary to popular opinion does not stand for F-yoU SanFran but rather stands for the Federal Universal Service Fee.

I am quite certain that is how so many people get their free welfare cellphones now known as Obamaphones.

I think this is an important step to getting rid of that abominable Internet Sales Tax, however, as it at least sets a precedent.

No one should have the power to tax the internet even for sales through it. It's about the same as taxing someone for Nebraska taxes when they make a purchase while in Ohio.

The War Revenue Act of 1898 imposed an excise tax on phone service. It was repealed in 1902.

It was later reinstated, reduced, and restored at several points in history.
