The great UFO wave (known at the time as a flap in early UFO-speak) occurred while I was at home between summer and fall quarters at Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia, about 50 miles north of the epicenter of initial UFO reports.

The second night of the saucers saw silent, flashing, multicolored lights reported from Albany, Dawson, Camilla, Cordele, Leary, Pelham Ashburn, Vienna, Moultrie, Leesburg, Tifton, and Waycross...

Later that night, at 2:25 a.m. Cordele police called their Macon counterparts and alerted them to a UFO that seemed to be flying in their direction.

We have one of the UFOs spotted, they reported, on Clisby Place. It was traveling east and has about six green and red lights around it and its shaped like a diamond with a tail, they said.
Macon police recorded 20 UFO reports from every part of the city between seven and ten p.m. on September 1, according to Sergeant Gene Collins. They came from everywhere. We even had one call saying one of them had landed.
The latter report had a UFO hovering at tree top level and landing on Zebulon Road near Interstate-475, but responding police found nothing. In west Macon residents described blue and green lights traveling in a diamond shaped formation.
Ill go against any man who says these things are a planet or scrap metal falling from space, said one Macon Officer, Dennis Brown, referring to early explanations for the phenomenon, after observing four UFOs through a ten-power rifle scope. I believe the yellow or white lights are from the propulsion system, he speculated. There is something inside. I believe the American government is experimenting with something and dont want us to know about it.

Who knows what was seen...but it left a mark!
Take the shot!
Probably NOT a good idea.If it is a genuine UFO/alien spacecraft, you have no idea what the return fire might be like.
The distances between stars are so great that real, physical interstellar travel is probably the rarest thing in the universe. It probably only ever happens for the motive of escape. In particular, there is nothing you could possibly bring back from a trip to another star which would justify the cost.
Fall of ‘73? I had an unclose experience in Wisconsin then. Too close!
It is settled science according to Professor Donald Kessler: "We know they're extremely advanced technologically, which suggests - very rightfully so - that they're peaceful. An advanced civilization, by definition, is not barbaric."
Who is to say that such a technically-advanced race isn’t from right here on Earth? About the time we climbed down from the trees they said “There goes the neighborhood” and split for an underground base in Antarctica.
Might take the sting out of that consternation.
I recall that Jimmy Carter once reported a UFO. Could it have been during these many Georgia UFO sightings???
Well, yeah. It's not like we can tell everyone and also keep it secret from our potential enemies, too.
Of course, back then we trusted the American government to do the right thing...
I dunno about Fall. September 1st in South Georgia is still very much summertime; heat, humidity and everything.
An advanced civilization, by definition, is not barbaric.”
Germany was also considered an advanced civilization in 1930.
Yeah, the ETs might mistake you for a dog...
I hadn’t considered that ET might be in law enforcement.
