Officials expect it to cover nearly 2,000 miles within five years
TUCSON, Ariz. — Federal officials say they're ready to begin building a "virtual fence" along the U.S.-Mexico border.
They expect it to cover nearly the entire 2,000-mile boundary within five years.
The executive director of the Homeland Security Department's Secure Border Initiative program said that construction could start within weeks.
The first towers holding sensors, cameras and communications gear to detect drug smugglers and illegal immigrants will be built along 53 miles of Arizona's border with Mexico. Towers on the remaining 320 miles of the state's southern border will follow.
Project director Mark Borkowski says New Mexico will get virtual fencing next, followed by California and most of Texas.

Five years later, no virtual fence, no actual fence, no border at all.
Nope, thanks to uber-RINO Kay Bailey Hutchinson, who defunded it shortly thereafter.
I heard it worked pretty good until the Mexicans came along with their virtual ladders.

She defunded the ACTUAL fence, as mandated under the Secure Fence Act. The VIRTUAL fence was never to become a reality, because it’s well...virtual. The monitors can be shut off, border patrol not deployed, etc.
Only Concrete and Steel will do!
Because “virtual” can be turned off or ignored with a whim.

The press will faithfully report from the Adminstration that 16 Billion virtual illegal aliens were prevented from crossing that virtual fence.
Kinda like a jobs report.
The border is secure! We kept out 99.9999% of the worlds population.
I worked on this years ago.
We were forced to use COTS equipment (radar/optics/etc) and try to make it work via cobbled software.
It was doomed from the start...and most probably purposefully so.
Had we followed the ancient Chinese approach (a frappin’ big fence) we’d not be getting young dim-bulb-crats slithering over the border.
The technology exists to defeat virtually all of the Mexican “get arounds.” Whatever it would have cost, it would have saved many times that much if it has been erected years ago. And even if building started only now, it would rather quickly save its cost. Look at the $3.7 billion-dollar boondoggle the Obamanation proposed, all without securing the border.
If they do build one now, it will be to alert the welcome committee and roll out the red carpet.
No virtual fence.
