Fred Thompson's political career dates back to Watergate. Since, he has been a U.S. Senator and presidential candidate. He now does triple duty in talk radio, as a columnist and as a respected character actor; a profession he's enjoyed success in since 1987.
In a Hollywood Reporter interview about his upcoming film "Persecuted," which opens in 600 theatres this Friday, Thompson admits things are tough for Republicans in Hollywood -- even for a veteran like himself:
Is it tough to be a Republican actor in Hollywood?
It's a tough business for everybody, but if you happen to run across a particular moviemaker who's politically oriented and your views don't coincide, then it could be an issue. There's no question about that. It's a tougher road to travel. Conservatives don't go out of their way to advertise their political views because they know they're the distinct minority. It's not just actors, but also behind-the-camera folks.
The IMDB logline for "Persecuted" reads: An evangelist finds himself framed for murder and on the run after he refuses to back a senator's proposition calling for sweeping religious reform.

The conservative crowd in Hollywood is growing fast.
“Hollywood doesn’t take a dump without a plan”
That’s easy. Just become a Republocrat. “Everybody’s doing it.” All you have to do it quit believing in and fighting for freedom and small government. Lots of people have already quit.
Although Fred is an exception due to his political career, I think most Hollywood actors are best off keeping their political leanings to themselves - whatever side they are on. Why alienate a large percentage of the your audience? Or as Michael Jordan said, “Hey, Republicans buy shoes too”
I like Fred, both as a politician and as an actor. That said, I think he’s taken a reverse mortgage on his reputation by prominently advertising reverse mortgages on TV.
I hear what you are saying. But why is it that of those Hollywood people who are expressing political views, so many express liberal views? Why doesn’t that alienate audiences and producers and affect their careers?
“Persecuted” trailer looks good enough to pay to watch. Seems that it might be speaking of the near future, the one religion world. I am going to see it and “America”. Vote with your pocketbook.
I’ve seen America twice. I’ll be interested to see how Persecuted is rated by the movie goers when it opens.

I agree the national popular vote is the craziest idea to come down the pike in a long time. It gives the Presidency to the last stolen vote. It guarantees recounts for years. It completely upsets the balance between populous states and sparesly populated but spacious states. But, you know all of this.
I just had no idea Fred has fallen so far.
Just stick with selling reverse mortgages, Fred. You really disappointed me ... what a loser.

You got that right. WE keep our mouths shut in the biz’ (most of us do) and it’s a tight knit community.
Heresy time:
I agree with Thompson on the popular vote. Why was the Electoral College instituted? Because in a communications-limited time, people could not be expected to be informed about various candidates for President from other states, so the EC was instituted so that people could vote for locals from their own state who were wise and delegate to them the choice of a President.
That reasoning no longer holds, indeed, EVERY time I ask an Electoral College advocate to name one of the electors he voted for in the last election I get dumbfounded silence. The Electoral College no longer serves its stated purpose.
Under the EC voter fraud is easier, because the cheaters can target just a few states and flip the vote with very very few votes (as actually happened in the 1960 election, with 8,000 cemetery votes in Cook County Illinois tipping the election to JFK).
The current system reduces the election to a few states perceived as very close, and the campaigns virtually ignore the other states.
Guys like Adam Baldwin, Nick Searcy, James woods, and Ken Wahl are very outspoken.
Conservatism sells on the screen even full of liberal actors.
