John Wayne. His style, manner, stoic confidence, embodies classic American attitude and masculinity. Iconic americana in his very persona.
That said, I’m even more partial to Buck Jones.
I’ll take RANDOLPH SCOTT! Better than both Wayne and Clint.
Well what about Joel McCrea? He made a lot of westerns and was great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree. Clint was a good actor, John W just played himself in every movie and it was boring.
Charlotte, NC native...Buried near uptown Charlotte.
My favorite John Wayne movies are STAGECOACH, HONDO, THREE GODFATHERS, THE SEARCHERS, and THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE.
His movies in the late 1960s and 70s seemed to be a parody of himself, same character is a different role.
The last good movie he made is THE SHOOTIST.
Those Clint Eastwood movies I’ve seen were also good, but you still can’t beat RANDOLPH SCOTT.
Scott seemed to play a more “edgy” character. THE TALL T, WESTBOUND, TALL MAN RIDING, 7 MEN FROM NOW, TEN WANTED MEN, RIDE LONESOME, COMANCHE STATION, THE WALKING HILLS. Now these are MOVIES!
James Stewart was a great western star, as well.
Joel McCrea was also great. Not quite as “edgy”. He made quite a few good low cost westerns. I love his BORDER RIVER.
Other good ones were Jimmy Stewart’s westerns.
John Wayne never played a ‘bad guy’ role. By his own choice he was always a ‘good guy’.
A lot of the early western stars had really interesting histories. Jack Hoxie lived for a while on an Indian reservation. Killed a guy, too. Major rodeo-star, as was Hoot Gibson and several others.
Those stars might be too far-removed from modern culture for most people nowadays to relate to, and sometime thier actual acting talents might have been lacking a bit... but frankly, I find them more ‘real’ and more genuinely connected to the western milieu.
I’ve had an original ‘insert’ movie poster of “Border River” thumb-tacked on my wall for over a decade.
Clint Eastwood is my choice
Oh, please. Educate yourself and watch The Searchers. Watch Red River.
Eastwood puts Wayne in the shade, but the greatest western movie of all times, and will never be usurped is “LONESOME DOVE”. Tommy Lee jones was good but Duvall as Augustus McCrae was the greatest western figure of all times,....and I don’t want to hear anyone say otherwise. Accept it and move on. It is often called the Godfather of westerns.....and it is. So, now that we all agree on the obvious we can talk about what is really important,,,,,Lonesome Dove.

Eastwood has more range. He can lift one eye-brow.
Agreed. There are only a few Wayne flicks I like...”True Grit” and a few others. Too many “insert comedy scene here” moments in his movies. Obviously, not all Eastwood flicks were good, he made stinkers like “The Gauntlet” and some others. But nothing Wayne did approaches “Unforgiven” or “Dirty Harry.”
ditto that
John Wayne.
